October gas three birthstones, which seems greedy, but there you are. Tourmaline, rose quartz and opal. And as an October baby, I’m pretty pleased with that!

Tourmaline is the show-off. It comes out of the ground in more colours than any other stone, and sometimes two or three in the one crystal: pink at one end, green at the other, like a slice of watermelon. The Victorians were mad for it.

Rose quartz is the quiet one. Soft pink, sometimes slightly cloudy, and warm in the hand in a way the clearer stones aren’t. People have carried it around for luck and love for a few thousand years. And matched with pearls? Heaven!

We have a truly lovely range of both tourmaline and rose quartz jewellery in the shop - something for all aesthetics. If you know an October baby, you know what to do. If you are an October baby, send this to someone. Subtly. Or not.

One month to go!!

Saturday 7 November, 10am to 2pm ish, THE Merchant Campbell Providore & Foodie Markets in our car park, 287 Comur Street, Yass. Put it in the diary!

This is our third year. The first two blew us away: the turnout, the stallholders, the whole day. The sell outs. So we are very, very much looking forward to this one.

Sixteen stalls, all from round here. Gin from Hillman Bros, organic w**e, figs & olive oil products from Rosnay Organics, honey from Boorowa, chocolate from Murrumbateman, Yass Valley Farm eggs, a paddock to plate butcher & small good maker from Bungendore, pottery & carving demonstrations from Good Hope, w**e and c***r from Intrepidus, 1027 Vineyard & Crafty C***r (pace yourselves), jams, chutneys, cordials and sauces from Seed Food With Love, a dandelion apothecary and Woof Gang with their delicious treats for the dog, so nobody feels left out. And more!!

Bring a basket, bring the dog, bring whoever’s visiting. We will have a solar powered coffee van too, so you can get your coffee fix while shopping!

Clocks went forward an hour last night. I hope you remembered to wind them on before bed or did you wake up, uncertain, exhausted & unsure what the actual time is (like me)?

Over this long weekend, we’re closed today (Sunday) and also public holiday Monday for Labour Day. Online is open the whole time, naturally. Back to regular 10am - 4.30pm from Tuesday.

Have a very safe weekend wherever you may be.

I met clever, clever pants Justine Taylor the other day to pick up a collection of her new works for the shop. What fantastic new pieces! I’m thrilled.

As always, she’s nailed the brief. We’ve got some whimsy with a nice, big piece featuring grog, two fun horsey pieces and a truly fabulous diptych of the home block. I love them all, which is a marvellously convenient position for a shopkeeper.

They’re hanging in the shop now, plus I have another three en route, so we’ve got plenty to choose from. Justine’s work has never lasted long on these walls, so if one of them is speaking to you, speak back quickly. 🏇🏿

Yesterday was World Heart Day, such an important day, but I forgot to post this!! 🙄

However, I did actually mark the day the only way I know how - by wearing my heart on my sleeve - well, actually around my neck.♥️♥️♥️

But seriously, here’s the important part. Around twenty Australian women die of coronary heart disease every day. That’s close to one an hour. Women are also less likely than men to be treated in hospital for a heart attack, partly because the warning signs get missed. Maybe because we’re too busy looking after everyone else and often ignore our own symptoms …

This year’s campaign is called Don’t Miss a Beat. Eighty per cent of deaths from cardiovascular disease come down to risk factors that can be prevented or managed, which means most of this is not fate.

So if you’re 45 or over, or 30 and over for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, ring your GP and ask for a Heart Health Check. Do it today, while you’re thinking about it. Your heart won’t wait.

I’ve always been a bit green. And it appears more so recently - everything I’ve been pulling to the front of the shop or purchasing lately is some shade of it.

Spring does this to me. The paddocks turn, the garden turns, and suddenly a rustic, green painted almirah from Rajasthan with its red trim and iron jali mesh doors is even more appealing.

A large green teak pitara box on wheels, the kind of trunk you’d hide treasures in for the long term, calls out to be in the front window with a stunning long, soft green console - over two metres of it - with vintage carving standing over it. Another, slightly darker, moodier green console table, is vying for my attention too.

In the other front window a particularly lovely handpainted floral green corner cabinet shouts for my attention as well. I just don’t know which one I love the most!

And there are so many more, lovely green pieces!

Every one is a one-off. Every one has had a life before this one, in a house somewhere, and now it’s here waiting for a home here. That’s the bit I love.

There’s something about crisp white cotton on a warm night that nothing else matches. Cool, clean, a little house on the prairie.

Here are our shorty PJs in plain white (worn here by our gorgeous Phoebe). Soft breathable cotton, short-sleeve top with a button front and buttoned cuffs, and shorts with an elasticated waist so nothing digs in. They’re made at the same atelier in Jaipur that does our block printing, one that looks after its workers and the planet and doesn’t cut corners on anything.

And yes, they’ll cop a splash of coffee or food eventually. That’s what the washing machine and Napisan is for!
