If you work from home, carry a laptop anywhere, or have a wall that could use some attention, I have some news for you. Our block printed laptop bags and all of our art are on sale this week and all are legitimate home office expenses that you can purchase before EOFY (30 June).

So, if you’re after a great piece of artwork for your office, now’s the time. If you have a home office, we reckon your accountant will most likely let you claim it. This is not financial advice. It is, however, a very good reason to come in.

Our block printed laptop bags are on sale too (along with absolutely everything else in the shop!). One of my staff has one of our laptop bags and said it’s the best they’ve ever had. Pockets for pens, phones, chargers and bits and bobs as well as enough room for diaries, notebooks and the like with plenty of padding to keep your precious lappy safe!

A quick heads up before the week begins....

We will be closed (begrudgingly....) this Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday for our annual stocktake, a good chance to count everything up, work out what to reorder and get the shop back in beautiful order.

With so many beautiful things and unique one-off pieces, we need to go through the whole shop, sheds, loading dock & store rooms and get our ducks in a row before the end of the financial year or our accountants will rap us over the knuckles!!

Finger crossed, all going smoothly, we’ll power through and reopen on Thursday, freshly organised and very pleased to see you. Our online store is open as usual throughout if you need anything in the meantime.

Our sincere apologies for any inconvenience caused. It’s a necessary evil!! 😈

Today is World Day Against Child Labour.

Did you know that according to the ILO, around 160 million children are currently in child labour globally? About half of them are doing work classified as hazardous. And the industries most tangled up in it are the ones that make the things we buy every day - textiles, garments, homewares, furniture. The cheaper the supply chain, the higher the risk.

When I travel to India, Indonesia and other wonderful places to source for Merchant Campbell, I visit the workshops in person. Not because I am required to, but because it is the only way to actually know. You can’t tell from a price list whether any business in any country is run with care or run on child labour. You have to go, sit down, have tea, meet the people doing the work.

Most of our makers are small operations. A workshop in Bali run by a husband and wife. A block printing business in Jaipur where Sonu Joshi has spent twenty years building something genuinely good. People who take real pride in what they make and who are paid fairly for it. I have watched their businesses grow over the years and that means a lot to me.

I’m not sharing this to pat ourselves on the back. I just think it matters to say it plainly, on a day like today, when it is easy to scroll past.

The artisans behind our Rajasthani, Indonesian and Kashmiri pieces are masters of their craft — skilled adults whose work we’re proud to bring into Australian homes. Every purchase is a quiet vote for fair livelihoods and brighter futures for the next generation. And keeping children in school, where they belong.

Thank you to everyone who shops with that in mind. It genuinely makes a difference to real people.

Winter is tough on your skin. The cold air, the heating, the sudden change from outside to inside. By June most of us are a good deal drier than we’d like to be. Dry, thirsty skin.

If you ask us what to do for dry winter skin, it’s one of two things. The body lotions from Herbalist, beautifully made and the kind of thing you keep by the kitchen sink and the bathroom basin and honestly just everywhere. And the lovely lotion from Quandialla, small batch, locally made, and quietly one of our most loved things in the shop.

Both smell so lovely. A little everyday pleasure that makes the colder months a little more bearable. Your skin will thank you.
