B-bis architecten

B-bis architecten We are designers of smaller-scaled architectural projects such as interior design, offices and shops.

Back in 1997, Evert Crols, Dirk Engelen and Sven Grooten set up an independent office for architecture: B-architecten. The three architects met during their education in Antwerp and Amsterdam. It was at the internationally oriented Berlage Institute where it became clear that Evert, Dirk and Sven shared a common design interest. Today, the office has expanded to three locations, Antwerp, Brussels

and Ghent. Ten years after the foundation of B-architecten, the trio launched a new initiative together with Sebastiaan Leroy: B-bis architecten – an office that focuses on small architectural projects, residential interior design, offices and shops, scenographies for exhibitions and performing arts, temporary installations and furniture design. In 2020, B-city was launched as a B-platform with the aim to shape and supervise complex urban projects. The core of its ambition is to work on large-scale projects that carry the potential of becoming new city districts. In 2022, B reinforced itself with a fourth pillar: B-juxta, the division of B that dedicates itself to restoration and renovation projects. B-juxta evolved from the Ghent-based Juxta, which has its roots in Architectenbureau Van Acker – later Avapartners. Since its establishment in 1967, the office grew into an important player in Flanders in the field of restoration, renovation and reallocation of architectural heritage and continues to live on today as part of B. With B-juxta came the third operating base: a stately townhouse in Ghent's so-called 'millionaires quarter' that exudes history but where, inside, we work on the future. As such, today B operates from Belgium's three university capitals: Antwerp, Brussels and Ghent. As a result, B has naturally grown into an office of more than 100 people. Each B-team has its particular focus and way of functioning, yet they all share a distinct innovative view on the variety of projects the B-platforms stand for.

(New project) Théâtre de Namur becomes Prisme.

To mark the launch of its new name and identity — Prisme — B-bis developed a temporary scenographic installation for Théâtre de Namur. The project accompanied the transition towards a new cultural structure bringing together Théâtre de Namur and the Centre culturel de Namur under one name.

Developed throughout the historic 1863 theatre building, the installation explored how visitors could experience the venue differently during the opening evening, while making the new identity visible within both the building and the city.

Three gestures shaped the intervention. At the entrance, long fabric banners moved with the wind and framed the arrival into the theatre. In the entrance hall, a central table presented the vision and programme for the 2026–2027 season. In the foyer, two oversized twelve-metre-long tables created a collective meeting space for the evening’s gathering.

Together with additional interventions by the theatre itself, the project formed a temporary spatial framework for the introduction of Prisme.

(New images) Colour, light and a stronger connection to the garden — House H is now complete.

What started as the renovation of a kitchen and dining space has become a more open ground floor, where inside and outside overlap.

A new fixed kitchen window with built-in seating pulls the garden into the house. In the dining room, a large folding façade opens everything up in one gesture. Above, a circular skylight brings in zenithal light, connecting both dining and living spaces throughout the day.

The interior follows a very personal brief: a home for a fashion designer and art lover, where colour is not an accent but a structure. Bold combinations, custom pieces and art-led spatial decisions shape each room.

At the centre of the kitchen sits a two-tone terrazzo kitchen island: functional, but unapologetically sculptural.

(New images) The Kuringen library has reopened — and we’re happy to share the first images of the completed interior.

Conceived as a family library, the project brings together reading, meeting and lingering in one warm and cohesive environment. Rather than a neutral public facility, the space was designed as a welcoming home for all ages.

Three distinct zones structure the library: a playful children’s area, a more secluded space for youth, and a calm, home-like setting for adults. These are connected by shared elements such as a central desk and coffee corner, encouraging interaction and everyday use.

Existing features — including the coffered concrete ceiling and sculptural staircase — were carefully preserved, anchoring the project in its 1970s character. New interventions focus on flexibility, sustainability and comfort, with modular shelving, custom seating and integrated digital support.

Now open again, the library takes on its role as an accessible meeting place for the neighbourhood — a space to read, learn and spend time together.

(Publication) House CD is included in the latest edition of Buitengewoon Belgisch Bouwen, a curated snapshot of recent architecture in Belgium.

The project transforms a former cinema complex into a generous urban house, organised around a bold concrete spine that structures the entire sequence of spaces.

At the back, a small city garden with swimming pond quietly extends the living spaces, bringing greenery into the dense urban fabric. Inside, split levels, voids and shifting perspectives create continuity between floors — while the varied roofscape responds to the layered context of the site.

A house built around one clear gesture, and many layered moments.

(Throwback) A house shaped by its landscape

House VC was designed as a series of split levels, following the natural slope of the terrain.

The programme unfolds across these levels, enclosed by a continuous envelope of black-stained timber and a green roof. Towards the back, a full-height curtain wall opens the house to the landscape, creating panoramic views and a strong visual connection between interior and exterior.

The project combines a compact spatial organisation with a careful material approach. Clay plaster and thermal mass contribute to a stable indoor climate, while the building meets near-zero energy standards.

A house that settles into its context — and lets the landscape in.

(In the press) Two flats, one home

The latest issue of VT Wonen Design features House DP — a B-bis project in a former diamond-cutting factory in Antwerp. Not coincidentally, the very same building where our headquarters are located.

Two superimposed flats were brought together into a single living unit, structured around a new spatial core. A central void and generous spiral staircase connect both levels — physically and visually.

The lower floor is organised around everyday life: children’s rooms, a walled-in terrace, and space for working from home. Above, the living areas unfold within a colourful wooden interior, opening onto a compact city garden.

Existing elements were carefully preserved and complemented with custom-made furniture, allowing old and new to merge into a coherent whole.

A project that transforms separation into continuity — creating one home across two levels.

(At the heart) House VVK’s kitchen takes centre stage.

B-bis transformed the ground floor to balance historic character with modern living. The kitchen was extended and reorganised, the terrazzo floor and reflective surfaces introduce a light, airy atmosphere, and the rear façade was upgraded with an insulated aluminium extension that frames the garden and draws daylight deep inside.

Original joinery was restored where possible, and key elements of the Renaissance façade were carefully preserved — a precise intervention that brings coherence and flow to the home.

A subtle blend of restoration and modernisation, creating a kitchen and ground floor that are functional, durable, and beautifully lit.

(In the press) Completing a modernist vision

Last weekend, House FC was featured in De Standaard Magazine — a story about restoring and completing a 1961 modernist residence.

Designed by Belgian architect Roger De Winter, this bel étage home in Laken had remained remarkably intact for over sixty years. A rare condition — and a strong starting point.

Together with the owners, we approached the renovation as a continuation of De Winter’s original logic. We studied the architect’s oeuvre and the initial drawings, identifying elements that had once been envisioned but never realised.

The open kitchen, foreseen in 1961, was finally brought to life. Original joinery was preserved wherever possible; stainless steel handles were carefully recovered and reinstalled. Where new interventions were needed, they were developed in close dialogue with both the house and its new inhabitants — matching wood veneers, modernist colour accents, precise detailing aligned with the structural rhythm.

The result is neither a reinterpretation nor a nostalgic reconstruction, but a shared effort to let the house become what it was always meant to be — technically updated, spatially coherent, and ready for a new generation.

(Fresh perspective) A concrete shell, reimagined as a domestic office.

De Kleine Prins in Zwevegem is now complete — a shell-and-core space transformed into a fresh, characterful workplace. The robust concrete structure remains largely exposed, forming a raw framework for an interior that feels warm, open and inviting.

The layout is conceived as a ‘house’: individual desks flow into a central shared area with a kitchen island for gathering, while a cosy corner with soft furnishings and a bookcase offers an informal space to pause and connect.

Comfort and warmth balance the rawness of the concrete. Climate ceiling islands, ambient lighting, curtains and carefully chosen materials create a pleasant, human-scaled environment. A contemporary colour palette — from the kitchen island to the textiles — contrasts with classic oak veneer details, while paintings and Warhol collages along the wall bring rhythm and identity to the space.

The result is an office that encourages collaboration without ever compromising calm or comfort.

(Competition won) A welcoming gateway to Gerhagen.

Happy to share that we won the design competition for Ter Scoete — a contemporary hospitality pavilion at the edge of the Gerhagen nature and recreation area in Tessenderlo, and one of the access points to the wider Merode landscape of forests, trails and heritage sites. Set within this wooded environment, the building will become an inviting stop for walkers, cyclists and families.

The compact, sustainable volume faces the central square and connects naturally to the access route, the forest and the nearby playground with viewing tower. Its terrace blends seamlessly into the public realm, creating an open and lively place to meet.

The architecture is clear and restrained: a square footprint, a single sloping roof and timber façades that ground the building in its surroundings. Public functions are organised on the ground floor, with the caretaker’s dwelling and support spaces discreetly integrated above. Flexible rooms allow the pavilion to evolve over time.

A warm, future-proof meeting place — right where paths cross.
