I am super grateful to for the opportunity to speak at this year’s Winter Clothing & Toy Swap! ❄️🧣🧸

There’s always so much to share and think about on the topic of having a sustainable holiday season, thanks to everyone who listened and swapped with us!

Some Discussion Highlights:
♻️ less then 1% of our end-of-life textiles gets recycled and 84% goes to landfills, mostly in the Global South
🎁 Black Friday deals start early and so should our DIY efforts: upcycled gifts, thrifting, gifting experiences, & furoshiki cloth wrapping
✨ we can reframe the holidays: instead of a time of heightened consumerism it can be a time of heightened creativity!

I decided to host a private Clothing Swap among friends to gauge interest in circulating gently used items for other items and encourage slow fashion… It was a hit! ✨

We happened to be experiencing a heat wave this weekend too (the irony!). If you want to learn more about how the fast fashion industry is directly linked to the climate crisis, check out my stories.

If you’re inspired to host a swap of your own, I highly recommend!

You will need:
🌸 A space to host the swap
🌸 Some racks and/or tables
🌸 Ground rules for guests (i.e. max 10 items)
🌸 Drinks & Snacks
🌸 2 hours & a good playlist
🌸 A plan for the left over items (i.e. return to owner or donate to an organization)

Closet Makeover Pt. 2 ✂️🪡✨

💭I am inspired by and I got the idea for these jorts the day before her concert (of course).

👖I had previously ruined my favourite pair of thrifted jeans by trying to bleach them and turning them an awfully blotchy pale colour by accident (😭). Luckily, one of my fave upcyclers and his partner put me on to the back to blue denim dye kit and that’s how I restored the deep blue of these jeans and watching Wandy’s jorts tutorial I was able to whip up these jorts within less than 24 hours!

👚This shirt… I’ve had it since 2004! My grandma Zina bought this for me from a Designer store at the Niagara Outlet mall when I was a kid! I remember it being expensive back then and so I’ve kept it all these years. ’s “Carmen” is about her Caribbean grandma. Full circle moments. 🫶🏽

All this to say…. the longer we keep existing clothing items in rotation, the more stories there are to tell. ❤️

Closet Makeover Pt. 1 ✂️🪡✨

So as you may or may not know, I like to upcycle and have taken on the challenge of upcycling existing items in my closet instead of purchasing any *new* ones.

I had a vintage red accordion fabric tee that was my Grandma Zina’s. I hesitated to work on this because I am very much a beginner sewista and didn’t want to mess it up, but I’ve been eyeing these boatneck top styles and I figured it was now or never.

Lessons:
1. I tend to work on things the day that I plan to wear them (need to work on the procrastination 🙃).
2. Sewing lighter fabrics like this one can be VERY tricky.
3. Being more mindful of scrap sizes and shapes can allow for less waste and more things like scrunchies!

75 caps & 16 hours. I threw in some Budweiser & Corona caps to encapsulate (no pun intended) making history at , and I freestyle hand-stitched a Trinbago map at the top at the very last second!

🌱Mailers made from biodegradable polymer (PBAT and modified cornstarch)
🌱Earring cards/Coasters made from granulated natural cork
🌱Business cards made from marigold wildflower seed paper
🌱Brown paper bags made from Kraft wood pulp (recyclable, reusable, biodegradable & compostable!)
