A kitchen renovation involves far more decisions than choosing beautiful cabinets and countertops.

Another behind-the-scenes look at Project Nelson as the main-floor renovation continues to take shape.

At this stage, it may not look glamorous yet but this is where so much of the transformation happens.

The living spaces are being prepared, the kitchen is moving through construction, and the bathroom is well underway. Many of the design decisions that were made earlier from finishes and cabinetry to flooring, fixtures, paint and overall flow are now beginning to become part of the actual home.

One of the biggest advantages of planning your renovation before construction gets too far along is having those decisions ready when your contractor needs them.

A renovation isn't only about choosing beautiful finishes. It's about making sure the layout, materials, lighting, cabinetry, plumbing and everyday function all work together.

Project Nelson has been especially focused on creating a home that feels warm, comfortable and practical for the homeowners while making thoughtful updates throughout the main floor.

There is still work happening behind the scenes, but we're getting closer to seeing all those individual decisions come together. I can't wait to share the finished spaces.

Today, on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we take time to listen, learn, reflect and remember.

We honour the Survivors of residential schools, the children who never returned home, and the families and Indigenous communities who continue to carry the lasting impacts of the residential school system.

Truth and reconciliation require more than one day of recognition. They call on all of us to continue learning about the history and experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples, to listen to Indigenous voices, and to consider how we can contribute to meaningful reconciliation in our everyday lives.

Where should bathroom sconces be placed?

BEFORE YOU START BUYING FURNITURE, START WITH A PLAN

Found a sofa you love? Before you order it, there are a few questions worth answering first: Will it fit comfortably in the room? Will you still have enough space to walk around it? Where will the side tables and lamps go? Does the furniture work with your existing fireplace, windows and TV? Perhaps most importantly, will everything fit together once the entire room is furnished?

One of the biggest mistakes I see homeowners make is purchasing individual pieces they love without first considering the room as a whole. A simple furniture plan can help you determine the right sofa size, chair placement, rug size and circulation before you spend thousands of dollars. That is one of the things we can work through during a Design Consultation.

Sometimes you don’t need someone to redesign your entire home. You simply need professional direction before making the next decision. If you have a room that isn’t quite working, start with the layout, not the shopping.

Two concepts. Two completely different directions. One design process brought to life through detailed drawings and 3D renderings.

For the Hendrie Kitchen Project, I collaborated with Claire Jefford Consulting to provide the drafting and rendering support needed to visualize different possibilities for the space before finalizing the design.

OPTION A
A softer, lighter direction featuring blue-green cabinetry, warm wood accents, brass details, a large island and an integrated breakfast nook.

OPTION B
A bolder approach with crisp white cabinetry, blue-green accents, dramatic dark walls, a checkerboard floor and a more streamlined island layout.

Creating multiple options in 3D allows the designer and client to see more than individual finishes — they can understand the scale, layout, sightlines, cabinetry, lighting and overall feeling of the room before construction begins.
