The Affordable Kitchen Company is the result of more than forty years of design, cabinetry experience by Ron Oakes. Having roots in a small two-man shop in 1972, making European-styled kitchens for a local Burlington/Oakville market, Ron’s reputation grew from humble
beginnings to International recognition through imaginative design creativity. Continually striving to be on the cutting-edge, Ron h
as researched every opportunity to find innovative techniques and materials for his
clients. In the mid-seventies that meant importing fine cabinet furniture from Amish shops in Pennsylvania. Several years later, he was one of the first to import advanced styles,
materials, and technology from Germany and Italy. During this period of design discovery, Ron felt a desire to "raise-the-bar" in the cabinet industry and became the founder of the first Canadian Chapter of what is now known as NKBA (National Kitchen & Bath Association). The following year, Ron was further recognized as the first Canadian Design Contest Winner of a U.S based competition. The 1980’s brought a time of growth as Ron
developed very exclusive design studios across
the United States and Canada. Travelling
extensively, as much as 400 flights a year,
garnered him a unique exposure to the most
sophisticated North American lifestyles. Living
in Los Angeles lent an opportunity to design
kitchens for the many luxury estates in Beverly
Hills, Bell Air and Malibu. This also led to working with clients in the Hawaiian Islands, Guam, Saipan, Mexico and Brazil. A showroom in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico proved to be a truly unique and rewarding experience. In addition to a very premium residential custom
market, Ron was involved in multi-housing
opportunities, particularly in developing Design
Centres for cabinetry for the luxury condominium market. Having contracted the most premium high-rise condo at the time in the U.S., surpassed only by Trump Towers in Manhattan, Ron successfully completed The Wilshire as the benchmark of superior lifestyle. From the Mauna Lani on the Big Island of Hawaii, to the Bel Air in Los Angeles, The Drake in San Francisco, to Aspen, Vail, Manhattan, Florida and Montreal, Ron took the lead in designing and furnishing luxury kitchens. He also has worked for discerning condo developments in The Turks & Caicos Islands and Mexico. Over the years, Ron’s many sojourns to European Design Shows in Germany, Italy, Sweden, Denmark and Austria continue to provide fuel to his creative desire to be on the cutting edge of design and innovation.
