Our next new animal is the BOW RIVER TROUT

I’ve wanted to add a fish to our animal collection for a while but I couldn’t choose a location. Once I chose the Bow River, I then had to figure out which view I wanted to use. This was a trickier one because I don’t fish but I’ve seen lots of fish in lots of different areas.
Then I came across a photo from Canmore that shows the nice curve in the Bow River looking back towards Banff.

THE STORY:
“The Bow River originating from Bow Glacier and Bow Lake, was named by local Indigenous Peoples after the reeds and saplings growing along its banks of the river that were used for hunting and fishing.

The river is home to wild Brown Trout, Rainbow, Bull and Brook Trout.

The waters are beautiful blue glacier fed colours during the summer and fall months and becomes pristinely clear during the winter and spring months.”

Our next new animal design is the ROCKPILE PIKA

THE STORY:
“If you have been to Moraine lake and hiked up the Rockpile trail, you had probably heard a little squeak that sounds like it’s saying “ME”.

That was a Pika!

Pronounced “pee-kuh”. This adorable furry creature is related to the bunny rabbit family. They have a tiny fluffy tail and big ears.

During the short summer season they can be seen stashing food across the rockpile. They do not hibernate but instead scurry through the rocks and under the snow to get to their food cache.”

*NEW ANIMAL*

Our first new animal for 2026 is the MORANT’S CURVE BLACK BEAR!

This is a special one because it’s a story from one of my very first wildlife encounters when I first arrived in the mountains.

This piece can be found on our website, at our in person markets this year and at the in Lake Louise.

As always, our mountain silhouettes are of the mountains you see at the location. This one in particular was a bit of a challenge to design with all the elements I wanted to include like the river and the trees and of course the train tracks. I wanted to make sure I included the leaning trees on that curve in the river.

THE STORY:
“Now a days the road sign says “Morant’s Curve”, but not long ago it used to say “Outlook Creek”. I was new to the area and was meeting someone at Morant’s Curve for sunrise but I wasn’t sure if I had the right place in mind. I googled and went for a drive to confirm it was the right place. It was.

When I got there, I saw a black bear on the train tracks. I managed to capture 2 photos before a train started coming from around the corner.

My reflex was to yell “Get off the tracks a trains coming” to the bear like it spoke English. Luckily the train engineer saw me and blew the horn and the bear ran down and then off the tracks.”

Rumour has it The Boss is awake in Banff!

Spring is in the air and we wanted to remind you about the little side project we are working on with our animals. The Animal Adventure Blog!

Because our animals are based on real locations and experiences, we wanted to take our pieces on a little adventure to visit their name sakes.
Our very first piece was Rundle Grizzly based on this view from Vermilion Lakes. The story that comes with this piece is of the winter when The Boss didn’t hibernate at all. You can read this story and more on our website. The link is on our profile.
