Quilts by the Bow

Quilts by the Bow Art Quilts by Margaret Jessop, 2022 Bowness Artist in Residence and 2016 Quilter of Distinction at the Festival of Quilts in Calgary.

Art Quilter for thirty years. Inspired by people, trees, landscapes and what ifs. I love trying different techniques and coming up with new techniques of my own. I love teaching and doing trunk shows from beginner Art Quilts to portraits to just having fun.

When Quilt Canada came to Edmonton in 2024, Slice of Calgary depicted the skyline of Calgary as part of the cities' friendly rivalry.

Some of my thread is a little older. I have to use it - can't waste anything. I think this will be used for basting. Love the price. I wish I remembered where I got it from.

Review of 2025
2025 turned out to be a very productive. Even with all the customer and charity quilts I got a lot accomplished. I made 6 pillows, 4 tuffets, 26 quilts, I bag, 2 costumes and 2 owls. Some were arty, some traditional, and many functional as well as decorative. As well, I finished many paintings, knitting, and crocheting. I keep wanting to go back to being a member of a guild because I miss the people so much but I am definitely catching up on my UFO's and quilts that I've been waiting to make.

Every year at the Fibre Art Network, we have a small exhibition and we are all given a challenge to do a tiny art piece. This year the challenge was sea life. So, I made a little sea horse. It looked a little lonely so I added some sea w**d. Then I added a lot of thread and it started to disappear, so I brought out the felt pens to enhance the sea horse. The whole thing didn't seem right so I added some felting. Once again, more thread painting. The whole sea horse seemed to be camouflaged but you could still see him peeking out. In the end, this is what I made.

So, I took a class from Cristina Arcenegui Bono (from Spain). I wanted to learn how she designs quilts. She uses ChatGPT and Procreate to design them. I'm not sure how I feel about it. Anyway, a few months later, I was asked to make a quilt for the Chair of our Flood Mitigation Committee (a never-ending fight). She loves trees and our river, so that's what I was going to do. I decided to ask ChatGPT to design a quilt with a river and trees. After a few tweaks, this is what I ended up with.

Last October in Houston (before the US election) I took classes from Phyllis Cullen and Karen Stone. Phyllis has a unique way of collaging and Karen is a curve specialist. I liked Karen's curve class but I wasn't fond of the raw-edge class. These are my Hawaiian quilts.

Do you remember when everyone was making house quilts? Well, I wanted one too. I designed a house block and handed them out to friends. As they came in, it was so much fun to see what people did with them, some had people ir animals in the doors, Sme had bright colours, some were more traditional, and some just me laugh. It was great. When I got about 50 or so, I decided to make up my neighbourhood. I designed an old sandstone school (1912 Calgary style), a bandstand, an ice cream shop, and a church. I made up a few trees and found some fun bicycle fabric and there you go. What do you think of my neighbourhood?
