There is $100 from the Alberta government sitting unclaimed by a lot of people, and the deadline is October 31.

It’s $100 per adult. You need to be 18 or older, live in Alberta, have filed your 2025 taxes, and have a household income of $225,000 or less. Payment comes by direct deposit or e-transfer within 14 days.

One thing to watch: apply only at energyrebate.alberta.ca. The province has warned about scam text messages with fake links. Don’t click those.

Legalizing a basement suite in Calgary? Check the bedroom window first.

The City of Calgary's Secondary Suite Amnesty ends December 31, 2026. If your suite qualifies and you apply before then, you can avoid development permit charges and registration fees. The separate Suite Incentive Programs closed September 28.

One requirement worth checking early is the egress window. "Egress" means a way out. Each bedroom in a suite needs at least one window that opens fully and can be used to escape in an emergency.

A window that opens isn't always a window you can climb out of. Tap through the photos for the three things to check, including the City's minimum opening size.

If your suite was built before March 12, 2018, it may qualify for reduced requirements. City of Calgary approves suites, so confirm what applies to yours. The link to the City's page is in the first comment.

Can't spell thanks without the A. Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at Apollo Windows & Doors.

This year, we're thankful for the homeowners who let us into their homes. We know it's a big deal to have a crew in your house, and we don't take it lightly.

On Friday, the whole team stopped for a Thanksgiving lunch together. It was a good reminder of how many people it takes to get one window or door from our plant into your home.

This year, we're thankful for the homeowners who let us into their homes. We're also thankful for the people in our Northeast Calgary plant who build our windows and doors, and for our own install crew, who worked through every kind of Calgary weather this year.

A Canadian just won the Nobel Prize in Literature!

Toronto-born poet Anne Carson, 76, was named the 2026 laureate today. When the call came, she was in Iceland, out “listening to the wind.” (Calgarians, we know that feeling.)

Here’s what we love about her story: a high school Latin teacher helped her learn ancient Greek, and she never put it down. Today the whole world is reading a Canadian writer.

It’s a great day to cheer for one of our own.

Some doors open with light.

Congratulations to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel, this year's Nobel Prize winners in Medicine.

Their discovery began with a tiny green alga and a simple question: How does it know which way to swim toward the sun?

The answer was a protein that works like a microscopic door. When light touches it, it opens. Years later, that little door became one of the most important tools in brain science. It's helping researchers better understand Parkinson's, depression and vision loss.

We love this story because it's a reminder that light opens things up.

Our corner of that story is a lot less microscopic. Every window and door we build here in Alberta has the same quiet job:
Letting a little more light into the places people live.
