Had a call last night - basement window shattered by a hockey puck at 9 PM. Homeowner was panicking, didn't know where to start.

Here's the honest advice we give on these calls:
First: Safety
Get everyone (including pets) away from the glass. Shards spread further than you think.

Second: Secure It Temporarily
Grab thick cardboard or plywood. Tape it INSIDE the window frame (outside and wind will rip it off). Use LOTS of duct tape. Looks awful, works perfectly.
No cardboard? Garbage bags + tape. Multiple layers.

Third: Decide If It's Really an Emergency
Call right away if:

Ground level or basement (security risk)
Large window + freezing temps outside
