Mac's father had a passion for birding that he passed onto his son. An opportunity rose to purchase a backyard birding store, and with a gift from his Father, Mac and Linda purchased what is now The Wild Bird Store. They ran the store for 17 years, building it on customer service, education, quality products, and supporting local artisans. In 2013 Mac and Linda's daughter, Kris, and business partn

These familiar sparrows have some fascinating traits you may not know:

โ€ข ๐‹๐ž๐š๐Ÿ-๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ๐š๐ ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ: White-throated Sparrows spend much of their time scratching through leaves with both feet to uncover seeds and insects.
โ€ข ๐…๐จ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ ๐ง๐ž๐ฌ๐ญ๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ: During the breeding season, they build well-hidden nests on or close to the ground beneath shrubs and dense vegetation.

๐Ÿฆ ๐๐ข๐ซ๐ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐–๐ž๐ž๐ค ๐‘๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐š๐ฅ!

The mystery bird is the ๐–๐ก๐ข๐ญ๐ž-๐ญ๐ก๐ซ๐จ๐š๐ญ๐ž๐ ๐’๐ฉ๐š๐ซ๐ซ๐จ๐ฐ!

This beautiful sparrow is a welcome sight during spring and fall migration in Alberta. One of its standout features is the small yellow patch between its eye and bill, making it easier to identify among other sparrows.

It's also well known for its clear, whistled song, often remembered with the phrase "Oh, sweet Canada, Canada, Canada." If you hear that familiar tune coming from a wooded area or your backyard, there's a good chance a White-throated Sparrow is nearby.

Fall migration is underway, and much of the journey happens while we're asleep! Bright artificial lighting can draw migrating birds toward developed areas, where buildings and windows create additional risks.

From August 15 โ€“ November 30, there are simple ways you can help:

๐Ÿ’ก Switch off lights you aren't using
๐ŸชŸ Close curtains or blinds in lit rooms
๐ŸŒ™ Keep necessary outdoor lighting pointed downward
โฑ๏ธ Consider timers or motion sensors

A few small changes after dark can make our homes and communities friendlier for birds on the move. ๐Ÿ’š
