The story of Rosenthal Magic Flute . 

The Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) collection by Danish artist Björn Wiinblad for Rosenthal translates Mozart's opera into a tactile, three-dimensional porcelain stage. [1, 2, 3]

The Inspiration

Music & Opera: Björn Wiinblad (1918–2006) loved music and frequently designed full stage sets and costumes for opera and ballet.

A Stage in Porcelain: Working with Rosenthal (partnership starting in 1956), he wanted to capture his favorite opera not with flat prints, but as a dynamic relief.

Character Scenes: Every piece (plates, bowls, vases, tea sets) depicts a specific act, character (like Tamino, Pamina, Sarastro, or the Queen of the Night), or scene from the opera. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7]

Technical & Artistic Innovation

The Wide Rims: Plates required unusually wide rims to act as a "proscenium" frame for the narrative relief.

Special Firing: To keep wide plate rims from warping or "flopping down" in the kiln, Rosenthal engineers developed specialized firing techniques.

Matte & Glazed Contrast: Relief surfaces are left unglazed, then smoothed and polished post-firing to create a soft, matte look against glossy glazed porcelain. [1, 2]

The Secret Detail

Handwritten Libretto: Look underneath any piece (even the plain white version)—the underside features the exact opera libretto passage for that specific scene.

Gold Handwriting: The text is rendered in gold using Wiinblad’s distinctive
