Cushion Rhinestone Placement

The cushion technique follows the same basic idea as honeycomb placement, but uses two different rhinestone sizes. My preference is using SS20 and SS6.

Start by alternating your larger and smaller stones, following an offset honeycomb pattern as you work. You can use the same color for both sizes or alternate colors to create a completely different look.

The finished pattern creates a really fun textured finish that is seriously satisfying to hold and run your hand over.

This technique does take a little practice to get the spacing just right, but once you get the hang of it, it’s SO fun and absolutely worth it!

Scatter Rhinestone Placement

The scatter placement technique uses an assortment of rhinestone sizes and is my #1 recommendation for brand-new beginners. It’s incredibly forgiving because there are no perfect rows or lines to follow, so no single stone ever really looks out of place.

Simply place a variety of stone sizes randomly, filling in smaller gaps with smaller stones as you go. You can create a scatter using one rhinestone color, or make it extra easy with a premade bling mix. We carry over 75 custom bling mixes in the shop, so there’s something for just about any project or style.

Scatter placement is also AMAZING for curves, odd shapes, and tricky areas where straight rows just don’t cooperate.

Honeycomb Rhinestone Placement

The honeycomb technique uses one consistent rhinestone size, but the size you choose can vary depending on your project and personal preference.

Start by creating your first line, or anchor row, of rhinestones. For the next row, offset each stone so it nestles into the spaces between the stones in the row above. Continue alternating your rows to create that signature honeycomb pattern.

This placement technique gives you beautiful, even coverage with minimal gaps and mimics the look of a bee’s honeycomb.
