A client called last month because her LEDs were yellow and half of them were dead. The system was running on the My Magic Home Pro app.
Calls like that are usually a mess.
My Magic Home Pro is built for indoor cabinet and strip lighting, not outdoor installs. The app could not change colours or even turn off the lights.
Opening the box, a few things stood out right away:
• 16 AWG wire on a Mean Well supply that can put out about 50 amps. That wire is only good for around 13 amps.
• Connectors that were never meant to be outside.
• Yellow lights and weak voltage down the line.
• Messy wiring and no label on the supply.
• No fuses.
• No surge protection.
• No protection circuit board. If something shorts, nothing shuts it down.
Most homeowners would not catch that. It is still a problem.
After about 40 hours of pulling it apart, this is what we found:
• More than 10 wires landed on the power supply with open ends, so live current could touch the metal track. That is a fire hazard.
• A 50 amp supply feeding wire that can only handle about 13 amps. The wire can overheat and become the weak point. Another fire hazard.
• Outdoor connections that were not waterproof or airtight. Moisture gets in, the copper corrodes, voltage drops, and shorts start.
• Nothing in the box to stop a fault. No fuse, no surge protection, no short-circuit protection.
A GOULY box is built for this. It is UL and cUL listed for wet locations, with a fuse, short-circuit protection, surge protection, a Class 2 isolated supply, weatherproof cable glands, and organized wiring. If something goes wrong, the box is meant to shut down instead of cook the wire.
The yellow lights were not a bulb issue. Undersized wire was starving the run, so the color shifted and fixtures dropped out.
This is not on the homeowner. It is on the company that sold a product they did not know how to install or maintain.
Doing it right the first time costs less than tearing it out later.
