At home the kitchen works harder for you than any other room.

Every morning, the cabinet doors swing open for you so you can grab your favourite coffee mug. Every evening, drawers open for plates & cutlery for the family dinner.

If I had to guess I’d say cabinets get interacted with close to 100 times a day.

And after years of being a hardworking room they start to wear out. Doors sag, hinges break, doors scratch, countertops chip. Every kitchen has a story to tell of a home filled with life. But there comes a point when you need your kitchen to support your life now.

One of the things I’m becoming increasingly interested in as a designer is what happens before we choose the colour, pattern or finish.
What is the material actually made from?

What information do we have about emissions?

What does it require to install?

How long will it last?

And because I’m still an interior designer, is it something I would genuinely want to put in a beautiful home?

There is rarely one perfectly “healthy” material, and I don’t think healthy-home design should be about creating fear around everything we live with.

I’m much more interested in understanding the trade-offs and helping homeowners make better informed choices.

I’ll be sharing more of the materials, products and healthy-home ideas I’m researching here, including the ones I’d actually specify.
