That’s always fun! I love rolling the fabric off of a loom and seeing what was woven over the past few days! It’s often a surprise reveal for us too, since several different weavers might’ve woven on this warp this week!

Sewing with handwoven fabric isn’t like sewing with anything else. It shifts, it has a mind of its own, and it demands a seamstress who understands its quirks. That’s where Sheila really shines! For nearly 30 years, she’s taken fabric fresh from the loom and turned it into the pieces you know and love: keyhole scarves, quirky ponchos, multifunctional bags, twist shawls, and more! None of these started as a pattern! They started as an idea, a scrap of fabric, and Sheila asking, “what if we tried it this way?” Next time you wrap yourself in one of our unique pieces, know that not only was it handwoven with care, but it was also sewn and finished with a lot of heart, talent, & ingenuity! ✂️🧡

When talented hands meet beautiful yarn, something truly special happens. ✨ We are completely smitten by this adorable little vest, lovingly hand-knit for our store display by Jennifer (Labour of Love) 💕… and also the gorgeous cable knit toque, created by my sister Leanne (The Knittystew)! We just rethreaded our 16-harness AVL loom! A bold experiment that had us both nervous and thrilled! For the test run, we decided to finally use our stash of undyed organic cotton.
You know why we had so much of it? Because nobody wanted to use it. It just sat there looking… beige. The colour of porridge and bandaids and knee-high stockings. On a shelf full of beautiful colours, it was always the second last pick! (Long story for another day, but the royal blue boucle remains firmly in last place! 😂)
But here’s the thing: as a warp choice, it’s basically the tofu of yarn. Neutral, yes — but pair it with anything and it absolutely sings! We’ve been weaving all kinds of weft colours through it, and trying a variety of treadling combinations, and we’re genuinely giddy with all the possibilities! The handwoven tea towels coming from this warp are so beautiful… people might not believe they’re made by hand! 😀✨
