This one is a blast form the past. I had dinner on the second floor at a restaurant in the old Morris Tea building between upper and lower water street. In 2006-07 this was NSCAD University ceramics studios, and my space was as one floor up from this window, with this exact same view. My new studio has a different view, but the sentiment is the same. I do Love being able to see the water while I work.

I haven’t been sharing much as I pushed through work for my upcoming thesis show. I’m running at about 50 to 60 hours a week right now between coursework studio work and thesis research and writing. I am still feeling incredibly grateful to have met so many wonderful people at the Nova Scotia pottery market so that warm feeling will hold me over until spring when I will hopefully pick back up some of my regular production work. In the meantime, here’s a quick snapshot of what life in the studio looks like these days.

So great to see Lisa from Best Kind Mud Shop at the Annual Nova Scotia Pottery Market yesterday. I switched from online ordering to real person ordering this summer, and it has been transformative to the way my studio functions. My materials are loaded into my car for me, they are always on hand. If they aren’t, she can add them to her next orders for less than it costs me to have them shipped from Ontario. She is also an absolute delight to visit with, building on the sense of community that comes with working in clay.

Lisa is responsive, warm, helpful and just like all of us craftspeople, a life long learner who is passionate not only about her craft, but your craft too.

If you are an internet buyer, or have not met Lisa yet, I encourage you to show up at her shop and learn about what she is doing. This is the infrastructure we need behind a strong craft industry in Nova Scotia, so let’s keep as much money in the province as we can, and show our provincial government that art and craft matter to Nova Scotia’s bottom line.

Thanks Lisa, for being the clay hero Nova Scotia needs.

Doesn’t always work out this well, but some mornings, the commute downtown looks like this instead of bumper to bumper traffic. The coffee was fresh, the air crisp, and seals curious.

On my way to the studio this morning, this song came on in the car and I was taken back to 20 years ago when I was indeed, young. When Halifax was new to me. When my airplane landed and I knew no one here. When I waited tables at Fife&Drum, and worked in the Morris Street studio until 3 in the morning. When Ramen and the NSCAD food bank got me through the end of the term when I was broke as hell.

Now, 20 years later I am entering the second and final year of my MFA, and life looks very different. I share my life and home with a family I never imagined was possible. My friends are my extended family (you know who you are!) and I haven’t felt a homesickness for Alberta in over a decade. Living and working in Nova Scotia has been the best decision of my life.

And these youngsters at NSCAD orientation today, entering their undergraduate programs, remind me of the time before, when where I am now felt very far away. I hope they get as much out of their experience here at NSCAD as I have, and that their lives after they leave here are as full and fruitful as mine has been.

So that is today’s nostalgic reflection. One day a song will come on the radio and remind you of when you were young, and you will see that version of yourself in the ‘kids’ who are entering where you are now.

This will never not be one of the coolest things about living on the east coast. Welcome back HMS Charlottetown.

If these mugs could talk… oh wait but they can! Each of the mugs in the show at is displayed alongside its own monologue. Some playful. Some existential. Each work is a little piece of the artist who made it. Worth a visit to the gallery to read each alongside the mug. Also, tomorrow is Mother’s Day 😉.

Peonies and friends. One of three special mugs made just for opening at tomorrow! The gallery is open from 12-5, and I will pop in early afternoon to see the other artists work if anyone wants to say hi.
So excited to be showing my work alongside some pretty great artists, whom I have long admired ❤️.
