My canoe knives work well on a 20 ft totem. The end of the handle provides additional strength and control for cuts.

I haven't used a lip adze before but have been giving it a try...
This one has a 14 x 7 inch elbow handle with a
2 3/8th inch lip blade... with leather lacing on handle for better grip.
(As described in previous post)
