Inspired by "iris", participants will build luminous, deep compositions using splatters, scrapes, knives, and some glazing! Experiment with matte and basic acrylics to create soft, atmospheric backgrounds, and layer expressive, gestural brushwork and spontaneous fluid drips to bring botanical elements to life. Gain confidence in colour harmony, intuitive movement, and the beauty of layers, and take home a finished, contemporary floral painting.
Note: If participants are interested in exploring purely abstract mark-making and texture techniques instead of florals, this class can easily accommodate that creative direction!

AC1861 Pen and Ink: Mushroom on the Forest Floor - Lorenz Peter - Oct 26

Any Skill Level - Youth or Adult
The forest floor is a lush world of moss, insects, mushrooms and plantlife, it feeds the imagination and reminds us of our connection to nature. This three hour session will help you learn techniques to render an image from a photograph. Bring your own if you have one or choose from one offered by the teacher. Create a lush background or focus on one feature, apply shading using a fine tip pen and brush work. Learn how to draw an outline in pencil and then apply ink in stages to complete the image.

Lorenz Peter is a multidisciplinary artist whose several published graphic novels have earned him a Doug Wright Award and cult status in Canada as "underground comics guru". His many comic zines and graphic novels have appeared on bookshelves and libraries since 1993. Lorenz's work has also appeared in numerous publications in France, New York and across Canada.

Black and white are two of the most powerful—and often misunderstood—colours on an artist’s palette. Used thoughtfully, they can create depth, drama, luminosity and beautiful colour relationships. Used without understanding, they can easily make a painting look flat, dull or chalky.

In this hands-on workshop, we’ll explore when pure black is the perfect choice, when to mix rich chromatic blacks, and when black can overpower your colours. We’ll also look at different whites, their properties, and how choosing the right white can dramatically affect your colour mixtures and the luminosity of your painting.
