Easeful.

Yes, we are on what feels like our 10th winter in the span of three months, however, when I look out at the blanket of fresh snow, I can’t help but feel a sense of ease. A small reminder to slow down, it’s not quite spring yet. And, that’s OK.

The snow is easeful.

As we entered the year of the horse for some reason my algorithm switched completely to posts about ‘DO DO DO’, take ACTION, move forward, and with speed.

Is there anyone else out there that read those posts and thought “ACTION?! I’m exhausted just from the last year of doing and figuring everything out.”

I have sat with this very thought and when I scan thru images of our projects and the calm environments we design, pondered, “is EASE not action too?”

Sure it’s quieter, less visible. Nevertheless, in my humble opinion, it’s still action and perhaps even just as difficult as doing. Much like creating warm, minimalist spaces. There’s less ‘decor’ and fuss, yet the details are just as intricate and if not more difficult to achieve.

And, the one phrase we often hear from our clients and their friends is “I can’t quite put my finger on it, but this room makes me feel at peace, it’s calming”.

I wonder if the same could be said for how someone creates ease in their life?

An oldie, but goodie. SAZERAC.

It’s been a while since this project has come up in conversation, yet while connecting with an inquiry this past week, it came up. First, because they knew the family that owned it upon purchase, and second, due to the first were able to experience the design first hand. There was a lot they enjoyed about it and were looking to emulate in their new home.

This is a joy to hear.

Our number one is FORM FOLLOWS FEELING. While I am proud that our designs are beautiful, I more proud when someone says when they walk into spaces we’ve created and say ‘we FEEL - insert calm, joy, love, happy, us, etc.”. Especially if they’re only visiting. We heard this about Bramble the other day too. It’s equally special.

Sazerac was one of my very first projects where I was allowed to explore my own personal style. It was a spec house meant to be sold upon completion - technically the clients were the general public yet I approached the design with ‘what would I want to buy if I were looking in Edmonton?’. Drawing on inspiration from Australian design and not yet having the access to products that we do now (pre-fab wood slats), a lot of what was created is completely custom. Curves (before they blew up), slats (in varying degrees), texture upon texture, and a relatively neutral palette. Oh and square tiles. Having designed many a public rec center & changerooms, I was in love with 2x2 tiles and couldn’t wait to design them into a residential home.

While this home was at the start of NAKO Design, it remains a gentle reminder of just how far we’ve come in a short 5 years since its completion.

I’m excited to share it again with all of the faces we’re seeing here!

I suppose all it takes to ignite the fire to post again is to win an award!

HERE WE GO.

This week was FULL ON in all of the most wonderful ways. Stressful yes, but delightfully so since I was in the right frame of mind. Coming off an emotionally and mentally draining few months (thank you Joni and Petland), this week felt like the ‘switch’ I needed to finally walk 2026 as I initially intended to.

We had so many wins this week.

From closing the posting for our available positions and starting the interview process, to seeing progress on several of our construction sites, and finalizing furniture for our long term clients (I see you 2021 AND 2023), to trying something new with our conceptual phase (turned out to be very well received). Ashley crushed her equally long to-do list, we won a new (incredibly unique) project, and for the icing on top - took home a Western Living Award for Design 25 (even though all the aforementioned kept me from actually accepting the award in person).

So cheers friends to keep on keeping on, slowing down when needed, pursuing when feeling it, and all the little life’s pleasures in between.

Affogato for the win.

Something very special is coming to you St. Albert!

We are thrilled to be collaborating with once again on a home where every detail has been intentionally designed and all finishes meticulously layered.

Coming summer 2026.

Stay tuned for more of this Scandinavian meets Australian inspired home.
