A simple ‘Solomon’s Seal’ you’re thinking 🌱 but what if I told you it was magical? ✨ Actually, all plants are…

Ok Becky, a little woo woo. I know, but hear me out ;)

If you’re new to gardening this may sound absurd. You’ve done your research, filled your cart at the nursery, Martha’d that yard up and are now you’re just simply trying to keep those plant babies alive.

Ok those plants are fun, they’re pretty, but I’m talking about the special ones. The ones that make you stop. pause. and remember. Because there lies the magic ✨ plants hold memories.

I have a few. Fireweed & Indian Paintbrush from my childhood. Giant allium in my mom’s garden. The smell of lilac…
But this one - a simple Solomon’s Seal, takes me back every time I see it emerge in the spring. My kids (so little) filling flats of tomatoes, peppers & basket stuffers at what was Brick House Greens in Enderby. A family nursery with all the plant staples. They even walked my kids over to see the new baby chicks in the barn. I can still see the smiles on their faces.

As we were loading up to leave, the owner added one more plant - a Solomon’s Seal, a gift.
Not what I would have normally picked, or came for, but free plants, um yes please! Fast forward 10 years, this gift is the only plant I have from that day. Priceless and full of memories of my kids choosing plants in the greenhouse.

These are the plants I love to fill my garden with. ✨ The memory keepers.
Looking back, that simple Solomon’s Seal was more than a gift but also an inspiration to what J&J is all about.

Happy Gardening friends… today’s the day, I’m finally getting those plant starters in the ground ✨
B.

I’d love to hear your plant stories. What plant holds a special memory for you?

They’re calling for spring sunshine and what? 14-16 degrees?? The perfect weekend to re-open the stand ☀️🌷

The ol’stand got a bit of a refresh and I can’t wait to put all of the finishing touches to it. It’s huge! and much too pretty for me 😂 but don’t worry it’ll be full of dirt and planty things in no time.

It’s been so fun to fill the shelves with all the Easter things, plants, pots, mugs, seeds and more - plus there will be a special pop-up by my sister this Friday with all of her Easter baked treats. So good!!

Stay tuned for more plants (so many plants)
Happy Easter weekend! 💛

In a world of ai. and instant gratification - there’s something so beautiful about planting a seed. It brings joy and feels like magic. ✨

March is a busy month for seed starting and I often get asked what I use … and so … swipe to see my Top Fav Things I use for Seed Starting 🌱

1.) Seed Starting Soil - good quality Pro-Mix is all I use.

2.) Seed Trays - I’m a huge supporter in using what you have, so please don’t spend a ton on these. I order plugs so have an abundance of 72 cell trays I re-use each year.

3.) Grow Lights - again not a must in your first year, but they definitely help! They have come down a ton in price and help prevent stretched out plants.

4.) Heat Mats - I have one double sized mat I use for trays needing an extra push. Especially tomato & pepper seedlings.

5.) Rabbit P**p - again, I use what I have… and at this home, we have a never-ending supply of nature’s gold fertilizer. It’s the perfect seed starting balance and is a cold manure so I don’t risk burning my lil’ plants.

6.) Rack / Stand - I’ve seen some pretty amazing DIY setups, but I like my heavy-duty metal storage racks. I use them all season long.

7.) Mister/Sprayer - this gem I picked up at Shepherds Hardware and I love it. The fine mist doesn’t disturb seeds on the soil (Yes I’m a top waterer, I’m stubborn that way ;)

*** honourable mentions that didn’t make the list :

8.) Fan - some type of movement over your seedlings will help keep them strong and improve air circulation

9.) Sticky Bug Traps - if you fill a room with damp soil and growing plants, you’ll inevitably get some bugs. These sticky things are perfect for catching fungus gnats if that problem occurs.

10) Clear Tray Covers - these things always break on me and discolour in the greenhouse, so I try not to use them - but good for keeping trays moist.

11.) Sharpie & Hockey Tape - last but not least, label your trays and plants!! You will not remember what you planted. As a hockey mom I’ve grabbed what I had and honestly the white hockey tape is amazing, sticks to anything and doesn’t come off

🌼🌼🌼 and don’t forget the seeds!!
I’ve stocked up the stand so please - give seed starting a try 💛🌱

December 22nd.
Just needed to put this here so that when we’re buried in 5ft of snow I won’t complain.
The rabbits are enjoying it too ;)

I’ve asked for a dusting of snow for Christmas and then back to green grass - so we’ll see what Santa delivers💛
