If you collect obscure tools or interesting conversation pieces, here’s a unique item — a 19th century coffin-maker’s parallel rule designed specifically for measuring the placement of handles on coffins. This rule was designed and patented by Pawtucket, Rhode Island funeral director Dexter W. Bellows in 1896. His name is stamped within the wood, and the brass hinge is impressed“PATENT APPLIED FOR.” An example of this rule can be found in the Smithsonian’s collection.

Continuing on the weird Halloween theme, perhaps one of our oddest finds in recent times is this 19th century mouse skull kept inside a tiny cardboard box for storing clock pins. And it has a fun story attached to it. It came from the estate of an elderly couple here in Halifax. The wife said that when she was a wee tot, her grandfather would pull this out of the desk drawer to show guests, and proceed to tell everyone how it was found inside the hood of a tall-case clock that was being serviced, and the skull was in fact the last remnant of the mouse from the nursery rhyme Hickory Dickory Dock.
