It’s almost fireplace season. Are you team gas or wood-burning 🔥

While there’s an ease to flipping a switch, I’ve always found satisfaction in building a fire. The smell of the wood, the sound of it crackling, even the ritual of tending to it. There is something about logs stacked beside the hearth that adds organic texture to a space.

Either way, there’s nothing more comforting than gathering around a fireplace when the weather gets cooler.

Which do you prefer?

A mudroom is defined as “a secondary entryway in a house designed for removing and storing dirty, wet, or muddy shoes and outdoor clothing before entering the main living areas.” Bonus points for a dog washing station.

The mudroom at our Toll Road project does all of that, with loads of personality.

Every once in a while, the collaboration between client and designer is a magical mix, and a room turns out exactly the way it was meant to. My client had a vision for the style of the millwork, and I one for the perfect sage green colour. She had a vision for the stone, and I one for the tile. We added texture, mixed some metals, and voilà: a beautiful, hardworking mudroom

Quite possibly one of my favourite views at our Grandview project, partly because it’s tucked at the back of the house and feels unexpected when you come upon it. One of my favourite approaches to design is creating unexpected vignettes, or carving out hard-working areas in small spaces. This nook was our client’s idea: a spot beyond the dining area to sit by the window with a coffee and the paper, or get a little work done. What makes it even more special is that it holds his antiques and art.
Nothing makes me happier than the marriage of our design with a client’s art, antiques and treasures.

Fresh new work 💦 The brief for our Pears Townhouse project was colour, so we didn’t hold back. A repeat client of fifteen years who needed a fresh start.

One of our favourite things to design; the banquette… aka the breakfast nook that makes you want to linger. Upholstered in a shagreen vinyl — durable enough for daily life, beautiful enough to anchor the whole room. The curve took some planning, but the result is a radius that lands exactly where it should.

Our Hawthorn clients came back to us after working together years ago — this time for a full reno of the basement, second floor, and a brand new third-floor primary suite popped right up to the roofline. Dark, moody, and seamlessly layered, lime wash walls, Blue Fusion marble, mixed metals, and fabrics that make you want to stay in bed all day. Clearly Paddy had the same idea.
