The early stages of design are where the direction of a space becomes clear.

Before the final selections are made, there is a process of comparing materials, studying colour relationships, reviewing drawings, and thinking through how each choice will feel in the finished room. A fabric may introduce softness. A wood tone may add warmth. A tile may set the rhythm for the rest of the palette.

This part of the work is tactile and practical. Samples are not chosen only because they look good on a table. They need to work with natural light, existing finishes, the scale of the room, and the way the client wants to live in the space.

The goal is to make decisions that feel cohesive, not matched. A strong palette has variation: smooth and textured, warm and cool, matte and reflective, quiet and expressive.

That is what makes a space feel layered over time. The details are selected with intention, but the result should feel natural and comfortable.

Wood has a way of making a room feel grounded.

Whether it appears through cabinetry, flooring, furniture, shelving, or architectural details, wood brings warmth and natural variation into a space. It softens clean lines, adds texture, and helps a room feel comfortable.

The tone matters. Pale oak can make a space feel light and relaxed. Walnut can add depth and richness. A medium wood tone can bridge painted finishes, stone surfaces, and soft textiles. When paired with the right materials, wood can feel timeless rather than rustic or dated.

It also works well with contrast. Matte black hardware, brass lighting, natural stone, linen, leather, and textured tile can all bring out different qualities in the grain. The result feels layered because the materials have a relationship to each other.

A warm interior does not need to be dark. Often, it only needs the right natural materials in the right places.

Small spaces often need the most thoughtful design decisions.

A bathroom, entry, mudroom, or hallway has less room to hide poor choices. Every finish, fixture, and line becomes more noticeable. That is why proportion, material selection, and lighting matter so much in compact areas.

In a smaller room, texture can do a lot of work. Tile, wood grain, stone, woven materials, and matte finishes can bring depth without making the space feel crowded. A mirror can expand the room visually. A strong floor pattern can create interest. A carefully chosen wall colour can make the space feel more personal.

Function is just as important. Small spaces need to support daily routines, not only look considered in a photo. Storage, clear circulation, easy-to-clean surfaces, and comfortable lighting all help the room work harder.

When a small space is designed well, it can become one of the most memorable parts of a home.

The commercial spaces we design need the same level of thought as a residential project, but the priorities often shift. A workplace, café, studio, or shared environment needs to support movement, comfort, conversation, focus, and the way people naturally use the space throughout the day.

Materials play a practical role here. Durable surfaces, comfortable seating, thoughtful lighting, acoustic softness, and clear circulation all affect how a space functions. Colour and texture still matter, but they need to serve the experience of the people using the space, not just create a strong first impression.

Good commercial design helps a room feel considered without distracting from its purpose. A boardroom should support focus. A lunch area should feel welcoming. A café should feel easy to settle into. A mural or custom feature can add identity while still feeling connected to the environment around it.

Whether residential or commercial, the goal is the same: create spaces that feel intentional, useful, and personal to the people who spend time there.

In this Art Deco-inspired residence, we created a palette that has personality, but does not rely on trend. Deep red, soft green, black accents, marble, warm wood, and brass details all work together to create contrast.

The key is balance. A bold wall colour feels more refined when paired with classic stone. Patterned surfaces feel intentional when the surrounding materials are more restrained. Curved forms, reflective finishes, and layered lighting add character while still allowing the rooms to feel comfortable for everyday living.

This is an example of using colour with confidence. It is not about making every surface loud. It is about choosing the right moments to carry the weight of the design and letting the rest of the room support them.
