Oh the thrill of dyeing eggs! It is wild just how much joy an egg tree brings. If you’re looking for a gorgeous way to decorate your home for Easter, this is it ✨
Here’s our how to:
1. Pick up your dye supplies! You’ll need your veg, vinegar and panty hose. We experimented with purple cabbage, beets, yellow & red onion, tumeric and lichen.
The recipe we used for our eggs was:
- 2 cups cabbage/packed onion skins/lichen, enough water to cover, 1 tbsp of double strength vinegar.
- For the lichen & yellow onion, I saved the dye and mixed 2 cups of lichen with 4 tbsp of the yellow onion dye.
2. Boil ingredients in a pot (we used a 2.5 qt) for 20 minutes, strain, then simmer for another 10 minutes. Allow to cool.
3. Next hollow out all of your eggs using a sewing needle. You will need to prick and make a hole at each end of the egg, big enough so that you can blow the yolk+white out! This is a bit cumbersome but it was nice to be able to find the time!? I used the hem of a thick, cloth napkin to protect my thumb when making the holes!
4. Gather leaves, flowers, grass etc. for your pattern. We used cilantro, crocus, and some leaves and grasses we found outside.
5. Cut pieces of panty hose starting from the toe. Roughly double the size of an egg.
6. Get your leaves/petals a tad wet and then place on the egg. Wrap, twist and tie with pantyhose to keep your pattern in place.
7. Once dye has cooled, place your pantyhose eggs in a mason jar and poor the dye right up to the top. Let sit for 15 - 24 hours! We did 24 hours each time.
8. Unwrap, lightly rinse and allow to air dry
9. Rub with olive oil for a little shine and to bring out the color.
For our tree, we found a magical apple branch in the forest, placed it in a heavy vase and hung each egg with fishing line.
There you have it… a sweet Spring craft, perfect for Easter! We’ll definitely leave ours up for a couple weeks ✨✨
