FLOAT is a series of handwoven stories that paints the shifting beauty of Atlantic Canada in wool and natural fibres, layering waves over land by hand as weft over warp layers a tapestry design. Textile art is a balance of strength and fragility. FLOAT celebrates the resilience of east coast communities and the beauty found in a landscape forever shaped by wind, water and time.
In woven terms, a float references the passing of yarn or fibre over more than one warp thread. Woven stitches are most commonly passed over and under threads, in a repetitive, meditative pattern called the plain stitch. A float over multiple threads can be used in a weaving stitch to create intentional patterns such as the twill or linen stitch. Or a float may be unintentional, a slip or mistake, an imperfection in the stitch pattern. This paradox of woven accident and intention informs the artistic practice of hand weaving and the creative life pursued by the artist.
As an artist, I create collections of nostalgic and narrative art by hand on frame looms using both traditional and modern weaving techniques. The traditional weaving techniques learned from my mother, combined with playful and modern weaving stitches using handspun and dyed fibres mirror the intricate patterns found in maritime nature and its cultural heritage of craft and labour.
My work is an exploration of Atlantic Canada that is rich in texture, dimension, colour and a sense of belonging while reflecting the enduring relationship between people and the ocean.
