If you have a Jacobus resin , you should probably check his tail , or more precisely, underneath right where it curves over . I was busy prepping when I noticed a tiny hairline crack. Thinking it needed reinforcement and fixing , I was starting to chip away at the resin to go down to the wire so I could re add apoxie … what I found was a huge bubble hole and NO WIRE… eek. This makes the tail so much more fragile as it had no reinforcement to give it strength . Please check your Jacobus resins.

I ADORE Jacobus but I really want to make it a portrait of Hubert the KPWN harness stallion so I will need to change the tail a bit. After looking at several photos , I noticed he has a longer tail then the resin so yesterday I drilled in the base of his tail two holes. These holes will have wires to support any additional apoxie I add. I also drilled a few more holes to grab onto any new apoxie as well. The wires were cemented in with super glue and baking soda.
Then I began adding apoxie. It will take several sessions to build up the tail, then I will resculpt into it . Here’s the progress so far.

Todays topic … favourite resins. There are so many gorgeous resins available out there these days. What are your favourites? Your grails ? My collection is super tiny but in my unpainted guys , I adore this Teke by Brigitte Eberl. I’ve added on to his tail to give it more movement. I haven’t decided his colour yet but he’s getting close to being painted.

Prepping older resins can be a process. Just recently I noticed an issue I was encountering with many bubble hole laden horses. Often the easy way to fix bubble holes or pin holes was to smear a filler like bondo over the holes or to use a product like Apoxie Sculpt to fill them in . then sand smooth once dry.
Unfortunately what I started to notice was the holes would easily reopen when I would sand these resins during prepping. It seems the material put into plug the holes was not adhering to the resin itself . Why? I’m guessing the mold release chemical . the larger holes seem to have a shiny base inside and we know that one of the first things we do when we begin to prep a resin is to give it a good bath and scrub to remove any traces left behind of the mold release chemical .
Often we are working on resins that have had work done years before .. so by the time we start , things are pretty delicate. I can only guess how a layer of primer and paint will make these areas create cracks when the unstable areas begin to shrink.
Is there a solution? Of course ! Before you start with primer , do a check to see if the surface is still nice and strong. I use a carbide scraper to lightly touch any questionable areas… if the resin and the filler literally flakes easily and collapses into a hole, I scrape out the shiny bottom to make texture to hold the filler. I only do this with the larger deeper holes. I find that after the hole is stable and strong .
I’ve included a couple photos to show a before pic of a tiny hold and the crater that appeared after a tiny bit of pressure. I had another resin where literally the horses whole eye collapsed because there was a bubble hole barely visible on the eye. A huge crater underneath , this would have easily caused a paint crack later down the road. I’ve noticed that it also caused air bubbles to form under the paint if left .
Take the time to check as you prep! Will extend the life of your resins paint work 😊

Hi there! I’ve wanted for a while, to create a page about all things resin horse related. When I got started in the hobby, finding info on prepping and painting resin was a bit of a struggle. I learned through trial and error what worked and what failed.
Here is a place to learn and to share ideas , or even to sell your resin horses. I will be starting out with some prepping tips etc. I paint in oils so I’ll be treading in that pond as well.
I also collect resins and enjoy seeing what others have collected. The resin horse shown was the first one added to my collection painted by another artist. This is Brigitte Eberl’s Sushi painted by Thomas Bainbridge.
