Design has a much quieter side that people do not always see.

Before anything feels finished, there are so many decisions happening in the background: how the layout will function, whether the scale feels right, how materials work together, what needs to happen first, and which details will make the space easier to live in.

For me, the beauty of a room comes from those decisions working together. The finished space may look effortless, but there is a lot of planning, sourcing, and problem-solving behind it.

Warm wood, deeper tones, soft lighting, and natural materials can make a cottage feel more inviting without needing to add anything overly seasonal.

I like when a space already has that sense of warmth built into it. The kind that makes you want to slow down, settle in, and enjoy the quieter moments at home.

Seeing The Loft Étoilé featured in Our Homes Magazine is such a special moment.

This project started with a garage loft that needed a lot of practical problem-solving, from water issues and air circulation to a layout that wasn’t supporting the way the family wanted to use the space.

I wanted to turn it into something that felt warm, functional, and truly useful for a multi-generational cottage property. Relocating the staircase, improving the flow, and creating more usable space made such a difference.

One of my favourite parts is the bathroom. The cedar, penny tile, and simple material palette gave it this calm, spa-like feeling while still feeling connected to the cottage.

When I’m designing a kitchen, I’m always thinking about how the space will function once it’s actually being used.

The details behind the doors matter just as much as the finishes you see first. Thoughtful storage, easy access, and a place for everyday items all help the kitchen feel calmer and more intuitive.

Because good design should make daily life feel easier, not just make a room look beautiful.

I’m always thinking about the pieces you feel before you notice them: how easy it is to move through the space, whether the proportions feel balanced, how the materials relate to one another, and whether each detail is helping the room work as a whole.

Choosing furniture is where a lot of rooms start to go sideways.

I never want a client to fall in love with one piece and then have to work backwards to make the rest of the room make sense. A sofa, chair, table, or rug can be beautiful on its own, but it still needs to suit the scale, layout, function, and feeling of the space.

For me, the furniture should support the room, not compete with it.

That is why a clear plan matters before anything is purchased.

A room should hold more than furniture.

I’m always thinking about what life will look like in the space once the project is finished. Where people will gather, what needs to feel easier, how the room will transition from a quiet morning to a full house on the weekend.

Those are the details that guide the design for me. Not just what looks beautiful, but what will make the home feel personal, comfortable, and truly lived in.
