As we come to the end of May, Mental Health Awareness Month, I wanted to share a little bit of my story. I've struggled with my mental health since I was a teenager but functioned pretty well for many years. Sadly after having kids my mental health slowly fell apart. I went from being a very successful nurse to severely disabled in a few short years. I had to retire my nursing license and focus on my health and happiness so that I could continue to be present for my kids.

That's where stained glass came in. I started learning stained glass back in 2010-ish thanks to my mother in law, who is also a stained glass artist. She taught me everything I know now and I spent many days going to work with her at a local stained glass store The Glass House in Kingston. I never fully dove into stained glass as I was so busy with my career but I enjoyed making things for my family and friends occasionally. It was an enjoyable hobby.

Fast forward to 2022 when my mental health was at it's lowest. At that time I started spending my days when the kids were at school at my mother in laws creating with glass. She gave me my first few rolls of foil and chemicals and some glass. She set me up with some spare tools and my journey really began there. I spent hours creating, designing, experimenting and leaning into a hobby that brought me joy.

I've been through many ups and downs since then but stained glass has been a constant the last five years that has helped me through some very low low's and has been there for my high's as well. I've had to deal with physical disabilities as well which has made it challenging but I've persevered. I've improved, I've developed my skills and found my creative flow and outlet even on the bad days I get up to spend time with my family and to make art.

All this to say that our mental health is so very important and if you need help please reach out to someone you trust. If you're in a low please know that you aren't alone in your struggles and I hope one day all of us who have struggled can find our passion, our stained glass, and know that tomorrow is worth fighting for.

It's definitely going to be tedious and my fingers are gonna pay but it's going to be so worth it when it's all finished! Tiny pieces are a labor of love and a test of patience 🤣
