Planning What Will Work
By Rebecca Lott
When the seasons shift, I love adding little touches to reflect the change. Years ago, I used to swap out much more. But now, after nearly a decade in our cottage, I’ve settled into a colour palette that feels like home. Instead of reinventing everything, I’ve learned to embrace a base that stays the same, while simply sprinkling in seasonal accents.
Our cottage main floor is grounded in soft blues, greys, beige, green, and cream. These are my anchors. They create consistency, so when I add seasonal layers, nothing feels out of place.
• In Spring and Summer, I brighten things with lemons, greenery, and fresh florals.
• In fall, I weave in warm gold tones against the blue and cream.
• For Christmas this year, I plan to add rich greens alongside my blues and creams.
Some call it seasonal layering. I call it sprinkling holiday cheer. The key is that your anchors stay the same year after year, while accents shift with the season. This makes decorating so much easier, more intentional, and far less overwhelming.
I’ve also found that planning ahead helps me stay organized. If I know my direction early, I can shop thoughtfully, picking up ribbon, candles, or a new accent piece that fits my palette, without overbuying or holding onto things I won’t use.
In the end, it’s not about having everything, it’s about choosing what works for you and letting go of the rest. That way, each season feels fresh, but your home still feels like you.
Do you sprinkle in the seasons or swap everything out?
