🌿 Kelsey’s Gardening Tip of the Day 🌿

Good morning, North Bay! 🌸🌿

Today’s tip is about choosing a healthy plant before it ever goes into your garden!

When shopping for a new tree, shrub or perennial, don’t just choose the one with the most flowers. Take a quick look at the whole plant.

A few things to look for:

• Healthy, evenly coloured foliage
• Strong stems and good overall shape
• No obvious signs of insects or disease
• Soil that isn’t completely dried out or soaking wet
• Roots that look healthy and aren’t severely circling inside the pot
• A plant size and hardiness zone that suits the spot you have in mind

And remember — a plant covered in blooms isn’t always the healthiest choice. Sometimes a slightly smaller plant with a strong root system is the better investment.

Start with a healthy plant, put it in the right location, and you’re already giving your garden a much better chance of success! 🌱

And if you’re unsure what to look for, that’s exactly what we’re here to help with.

Happy gardening! 🌸

Tradescantia Tuesday 💜

🌿 Trailing, spreading or upright, depending on the variety
🌿 Bright indirect light. Colour varieties need more light to keep their deep hues
🌿 Water when top portion of soil is dry. Avoid overwatering as this may cause root rot
🌿 Loose well draining potting medium like ProMix is best
🌿 Fast growing

🌿 Kelsey’s Gardening Tip of the Day 🌿

Good morning, North Bay! 🍂🌱

Today’s tip is about knowing what your soil actually needs before you start adding things to it.

It can be tempting to automatically add lime, fertilizer or other soil amendments every fall — but more isn’t always better!

A simple soil test can help tell you:

• Your soil’s pH
• Whether nutrients are lacking
• If you actually need lime
• What type of fertilizer or amendment makes sense
• Whether you may already have enough nutrients in the soil

Different plants prefer different soil conditions, so treating every garden bed the same way can sometimes create more problems than it solves.

Test first, amend second. 🌱

Knowing what’s happening below the surface can save you money and help you choose the right products for healthier plants next season.

Happy gardening! 🌸

🌿 Kelsey’s Gardening Tip of the Day 🌿

Good morning, North Bay! 🌸🍂

As we head into September, today’s tip is about plants that won’t survive our Northern Ontario winter in the ground.

Tender favourites such as:

• Dahlias
• Cannas
• Gladiolus
• Calla lilies

need a little extra attention before the hard frost arrives.

Once the foliage has been touched by frost or begins dying back, carefully lift the bulbs, corms or tubers from the soil.

A few tips:

• Dig carefully so you don’t damage them
• Gently remove excess soil
• Allow them to dry before storing
• Remove anything soft, rotten or damaged
• Store them somewhere cool, dark and frost-free for the winter
• Label your varieties — come spring, you’ll be glad you did! 🌸

And don’t rush to dig them too early. Letting the plants finish their season gives them more time to store energy underground.

A little fall preparation can help you enjoy those beautiful plants again next summer! 🌿

Happy gardening! 🌸
