Wiping your windows every morning isn’t the end of the problem. It might be the start of one.

That moisture doesn’t always stay on the glass. Over time, it can seep into the wood framing around the window, and wet wood is exactly what carpenter ants go looking for. Scott found this one on a job, and it’s a classic example of what years of “just mop it up” can lead to.

So before you pick a new window, check what it’s sitting in. Press gently on the wood around the sill and the bottom of the frame. Solid is good. Soft, spongy or crumbly means water has been getting in, and that needs to be part of the plan when the new window goes in.

It’s a two-minute check, and it tells you a lot about what your window replacement in Saanich, Sidney or Victoria will actually involve.

This is Windy, and she's at the top of our thankful list this year.

For years she rode sh***un in the truck and met customers at the door with a brochure in her mouth. Off the clock, she lived a pretty great life. Boat days, road trips, and drives all the way to Mexico, where our family helped rescue dogs and bring them home to new families here in Canada.

A lot of older sliding patio doors have one lock holding the whole thing shut. This one has three.

Watch all three locking points engage on one of our premium patio doors. Instead of one lock holding one spot, the door is held shut by two hooks at the handle and a foot lock down at the track. That matters when you’re away, and when you’re asleep.

Fog you can't wipe off is a different problem than condensation you can.

If it's on the room side of the glass, it's usually humidity. Run the bathroom and kitchen fans, open the blinds, and it often clears up on its own.

If it's between the panes, the seal on that sealed unit has failed. No amount of wiping will fix it, and that window isn't keeping the heat in like it used to.

We see both on window replacements all the time.
