Synthesis Design The combining of elements to create a unified whole. Design is everywhere and in every thing. You just need to know where to look, or what to look for.

That is what inspires us. While each project is unique, there is always a set of rules to follow (or break)! No two sites are alike. Throw in a wish list that exceeds a budget, a bunch of municipal rules and restrictions, and a deadline.....now our curiosity is piqued. Design is everywhere and everyone at Synthesis Design is dedicated to finding unique and thought provoking solutions every time. That is what gets us up in the morning.

As Interior Design Show Vancouver has come to a close, we’re reflecting on the many collaborators whose expertise and creativity shaped STILL/not still.

From the sculptural lighting to the carefully curated furnishings and flooring, every element contributed to the story and atmosphere of the space.

Lighting by Adanac Sales , featuring MATTHEW McCORMICK STUDIO Studio’s Dodeca chandelier integrated with Lutron By Design

Furniture by CF Interiors and Moe’s Home Collection

Carpet supplied by Milliken flooring BC and coordinated and installed by Vancouver Commercial Flooring

Our sincere thanks to everyone who helped bring this installation to life. It was a privilege to create alongside such an exceptional group of partners.

It’s happening: STILL/not still is being planted on the show floor.

Before you experience it for yourself at IDS Vancouver starting tomorrow, we wanted to bring you the story behind the build.

Like a forest, there are no visible entry or exit points here; you’re free to choose your own path. Walk within the arches, immersed in the space, or move through them into the central canopy.

Every arch is built from BC coastal hemlock, thermally modified without chemicals to bring out a warmth the industry has long overlooked. It’s a wood that makes up much of our coastal forest, finally getting its due.

More than an installation, STILL/not still is the work of a network of local makers, technicians, and partners — now coming together piece by piece.

Join us at IDS Vancouver this weekend, September 24- 27, and experience STILL/not still yourself.

Voiceover narration by Synthesis Design team Curt, Julie and Pedro.

STILL/not still is more than an installation, it’s a celebration of BC wood, brought to life by hands of partners who know it best.

Crafted in collaboration, the forest is coming to life.

The arches are being constructed from Western Forest Products ’ thermally modified Hem-Fir, donated in full to create all 40 arches of our “forest.” Milled and manufactured on Vancouver Island, it’s a product that’s long been underused and underappreciated — until now.

The modern take on our Coastal forest is being built by Lauten Woodworking . Adrian Lauten and his team are milling thermally modified Hemlock for the very first time, cutting, shaping, and finishing each piece into the smooth, precise components that form every arch.

Connecting the pieces, JJS ’s precision connectors let Lauten create perfectly mitered columns and beams, meaning the arches can be unassembled and reassembled for whatever comes after IDS Vancouver.

Stepping into the forest, Marko Barakoski is crafting the central bars by hand, mitering natural Hemlock donated by Canadian Bavarian , a mill running on wood chip offcuts and solar power — and finished with a food-safe wax that lets the wood’s natural gold tone shine.

Come walk the arches at IDS Vancouver, and see how the rest of STILL/not still comes together.

Like all great projects, STILL/not still started with an idea..

From those first models to renderings, and now, the final pieces are coming together behind the scenes. It’s almost time to see this one come to life.

STILL/not still celebrates BC wood innovation. The immersive design is a modern take on our coastal forest: a series of seemingly random arches, nesting among each other, forming a continuous perimeter around the space.

Like a forest, there are no visible entry or exit points — you’re free to choose your own path.

Choose yours September 24-27 at IDS Vancouver.

Designed as a series of horizontal forms that follow the site’s natural slope, the Westport Residence is a study of mass, void, and connection to nature. Built into the rock face, with outdoor spaces floating among the trees and expansive windows flooding the home with light, it offers a contemporary expression of West Coast living.

Day to night at the Bonnymuir Residence…

A sculptural S-shaped element frames the entry, anchoring the clean, geometric form. Set on a flanking corner lot in the British Properties, the custom home is a contemporary home designed to navigate complex site constraints while capturing expansive mountain and ocean views. The gently sloped site, bounded by two street frontages and no rear yard, required a thoughtful layout that balances openness with privacy.

Beverley Crescent, a home filled with personal history, begins a new chapter. Passed down to our client after many years, this was the house where much of their childhood was spent—now thoughtfully renovated to support life today while preserving the character that made it feel like home.

The renovation involved a substantial transformation, including new foundations, a garage replacing the original carport, and a generous covered deck that extends everyday living outdoors. Carefully selected materials—locally sourced fir beams, a rough cedar trellis, and beveled cedar siding—honour the home’s original spirit while grounding it firmly in the present.
