One question I hear often is:
“How do I know if buying something Indigenous-made is support, or appropriation?”

The honest answer is that many people care, but have been taught to engage through fear instead of relationship.

Buying directly from Indigenous artists, makers, and businesses is one of the clearest ways to offer support.

Appropriation is not the same as purchasing from the source. Appropriation happens when people take Indigenous designs, copy cultural expressions, profit from them, or use them without context, permission, or respect.

That said, not everything is meant for everyone. Some items carry ceremonial, familial, or community-specific meaning. That is why context matters, and why asking thoughtful questions is not a bad thing.

You do not need to avoid Indigenous art and culture altogether because you are afraid of getting it wrong.

You do need to engage with care.

Support Indigenous businesses. Read what is being shared. Ask when you are unsure. And remember that respectful purchasing is very different from taking.

Respectful engagement with Indigenous peoples and culture does not start with knowing everything.

It starts with care.

A lot of people want to engage in a good way, but get stuck trying to say the perfect thing, ask the perfect question, or understand every protocol before taking a first step. That pressure can turn into distance. And distance does not build relationship.

There are simple places to begin.

Support Indigenous businesses.
Ask thoughtful questions.
Do not assume access.

You do not need to arrive as an expert. You do need to arrive with humility, respect, and a willingness to learn.

Real engagement is not about performative certainty. It is about how you show up.

Hands learning together, stories woven with care.

Healing happens when hands create together.

A recent client told us, 'So therapeutic and meaningful.' It wasn’t just about weaving a dreamcatcher. It was about listening, sharing, and building trust around the table.

Every gathering reminds me why these moments matter. If you’re looking to bring your team closer, let’s start a conversation. 🌿
