Probably one of the rugs that fascinated me most in my early restoration career. Mid to later 1800s Persian Feraghan Sarough.
Securing ends, filling a few holes, re-attaching old repaired loose sides .
After a thorough dusting and wet washing it returned to the third generation families living room.

Whenever possible its best to retain an original fringe.
Left short they actually last as seen, far longer. This is because our feet land on the edges of the pile, protecting an shorter fringe from much of the heavy wear.

This circa 1900 traditional Peking Chinese carpet had its worn fringes, cabled and re-bound for continued use and durability. A thorough wet washing and removing white warp knots brought its life back.

Some of the most consistent high quality Afghan carpets come from Mazar weavers. This 'cats paw' Bokhara is a favoured Bokhara geometric pattern.
At over 360 knots per sq. Inch, this one is very fine for a wool on wool warped carpet.
I handled a pair at close to 800 knots per sq. in.

I was chatting today and wear spots came up for really old rugs.
This Mahal Persian of medium weave was worn in most areas.
By carefully re-piling the worst areas judiciously, the rugs overall appearance improved dramatically.
By re-piling the worst , eye catching areas, the rest of the wear seemed more acceptable.
This is info relating to costs also.
Entire restoration in the West was far too costly.
You could buy a better old rug.
This was a solution to meet budgets and allow a beloved old rug to stay in use in the family. 👍🏻
As a side note, I discovered that this was probably a much longer rug, and was cut & shut to leave a room size rug. It was well done and not noticeable until washed and seen under bright light closeup.

Never say never.
A great old recovered Afghan rug.
I remember this was beside a rug that bled in a flood so badly it changed this smaller rug to black. It is a testament to the strength and durability of Aghan wool on wool hand knotted carpets *
