Located on a prominent corner in Ottawa’s Glebe neighbourhood, Altared explores how a compact footprint can support multiple ways of occupying the same space throughout the day.
Originally dark and disconnected from the surrounding streetscape, the renovation introduces two carefully positioned openings that establish a stronger relationship between the cafe and the public realm. A new take-out window encourages informal interaction with pedestrians, while a large corner window fills the interior with natural light and places the activity within on display.
As daylight fades, the space takes on a different character. The site’s angled street parking becomes part of the architecture, with the headlights of arriving vehicles illuminating the interior to create an unexpected backdrop for live performances.
A custom system of movable plywood furniture allows the cafe to transition effortlessly between retail, dining, and performance. During the day, the pieces function as product displays. By evening, concealed hinges and integrated casters allow them to fold, pivot, and roll into seating and bar tables, transforming the interior without increasing its footprint.
Rather than expanding the building, the project expands its possibilities, demonstrating how flexibility, material economy, and a stronger relationship with the street can redefine a neighbourhood gathering place.
