Hey everyone! Next up in our staff reintroduction is Sarah!we miss seeing her in the shop on Saturdays, but you can still see her if you sign up for our Sock Knitting class! Read below to get to know her a bit better!

Name: Sarah Deeth

Years worked: maybe 7 or 8? I think I started in either 2017 or 2018

Years knitting: About 25, but I would say that I’ve been knitting well for about 15 years. I had many years of off and on knitting, making only boring scarves or hats that didn’t close properly.

What brought me to the fibre arts: In a word, fidgeting. I always had a hard time just sitting and watching tv, I was always doing something. I would do cross stitch and watch the X-Files. Then a friend started knitting and I knew immediately that that was going to be my tv-watching craft. And from there it just blossomed into a true passion.

Current WIP: Birdsong, a sweater I’m knitting in Peerie, which is breaking my heart a little because it was a great yarn and I really miss it.

Favourite Yarn: This almost felt like a trick question because there are many good things to say about all the yarns-and all for different reasons! But if I had to really narrow it down I would say West Yorkshire Spinners’ DK Bluefaced Leicester. It truly is incredible to work with. A runner up would be their sock yarn-tremendous quality for tremendous value.

Favourite Notions: This one is easy - my CocoKnits Yarn Snip. Small, light, fits perfectly in any project bag and much cheaper than a pair of scissors.

Favourite thing about the store/teaching: When I worked at the store it was just meeting and chatting with other knitters. It was just so fun, talking to everyone about the yarn and what they were making.

Now that I teach, my favourite thing is seeing knitters learn something new and run with it, building confidence with every stitch. I know that sounds a bit cheesy but I truly love seeing people succeed!

Fun fact: Outside of knitting, I enjoy reading and music, all genres of both right across the board. I will never tire of knitting socks or shopping for sock yarn, and I’m also a beekeeper on the side!

Next up needs no introduction: our lovely Grace, who you will see most often in the shop! She also teaches quite a few of the classes, including anything related to weaving and felting! Read below to learn more about Grace!

Name: Grace Mahoney

Years worked at Needles in the Hay: 9 years!

Years knitting/crocheting: I've been crocheting for as long as I can remember! I knit my first sweater over 40+ years ago!

What brought you to the fibre arts: I have always had string in hands as it has helped me process life. It's meditative and promotes connectedness!

Current WIP: Summertime for a lot of knitters is socks on docks time! I'm more into toes on patios!

Favourite yarn(s) in the store: I love to touch the new Alpakka Silke; it's so soft!! If you miss the Road to China Light, this will scratch that itch!

Favourite thing about working at Needles in the Hay: I get to take my need for organization out on the wall of wool; it's an ongoing game of Tetris. I also love watching customers get to experience amazing yarns!

Fun Fact: I'm fun and that's a fact!

We officially have Elbows Up Kits available in the Julie Asselin Journey Sport! Such a fun, quick knit to show your love for your country! And it has exactly the amount of yarn you'll need to finish the project!

It's also a great option to keep you company if you're deep in the NHL Playoffs, or if you happen to have become obsessed with the first season of Off Campus like I have!

Years worked at Needles in the Hay: Just hit the 4 year anniversary!

Years knitting/crocheting: 50+

What brought you to the fibre arts: My grandmothers taught me to knit and crochet as a young child; I don’t remember a time when I wasn’t working on something!

Current WIP: Tioraidh Cardigan by Kate Davies (my first steeked sweater! Even the arm holes are steeked!)

Favourite yarn(s) in the store: I honestly love them all! This is a hard question…it's like choosing a favourite child! Since I have 3 kids, I’ll pick my top 3 yarns:

1. 90 Varas by Wool Dreamers

2. Soft Donegal

3. Julie Asselin Fine

Favourite notion(s) in the store: Chiaogoo needles! All of them! Going to try the quads on my next project!

Favourite thing about working in the store/teaching:  chatting with and learning from other fibre artists. The time just flies!

Fun fact about you: when I’m not at the shop or knitting you can find me either at the gym, riding my bike to Lakefield, reading a good book or baking something sweet!

Hello! We will be closed for the Victoria Day long weekend for some exciting renovations in the shop! Stay tuned for the final reveal!

In the meantime, pop in today from 11-5 to stock up!

Deanna is recommending The Vegan Bag yarn by ; a unique fibre made of lyocell and pineapple leaf that is perfect for bags! The perfect project to tide you over for the long weekend! The solids are great, but the variegated colours version is a real show stopper! And the best part: one ball makes a whole bag! That means fewer pesky ends to weave in! Take a look at the sample Grace made for the shop!

Hello everyone!

We thought it was about time we reintroduce the staff to our lovely customers! First on the docket is me, Shaelyn (she/they), the person behind our social media content! Below is some info to get to know us better!

Name: Shaelyn

Years worked at Needles in the Hay: 4 years and counting!

Years Knitting/Crocheting: 20 years knitting and 10 years crocheting at an advance beginner level lol!

What Brought You to Knitting: my grandma set me up with the basics when I was 10 and the Internet has taught me the rest! I was a pretty casual knitter until the COVID pandemic, and now I don't go a day without knitting!

Current WIP: a Melange/Otto Baby Sweater by in Bo Peep in Safari Park & Teddy Bear. And a Lyra Top by in ITO Karei (coming to the shop soon!!)

Favourite Yarn In Store: It was The Fibre Co's Cumbria (RIP), but now Jamieson & Smith 2-ply Jumper Weight has taken its place! It has become my go to for any fi*****ng weight projects! The colour selection is fabulous and it knits up into such a comfortable, low pilling fabric!

Favourite Things to Knit: I'm a ride or die sweater knitter, usually in some sort of combo of browns, creams, or greens!

Favourite Thing about Working at Needles in the Hay: I always say that it never feels like work when I'm in the shop; I'm just hanging out with friends and gabbing about yarn! I feel so lucky to be able to help people along their crafting journeys, especially getting to run the Purlez-Vous Knit Nights every Tuesday from 7-9!

Fun Fact: I am a wedding DJ during the summer months! It's a crazy and chaotic job, but I love every minute of it!

We're all so excited about Ronja Hakalehto's newest book, Unfolding Landscapes, that Deanna had to whip up a sample immediately!

This stunner (modelled by Chris) is the Heading North Sweater, knit in the recommended yarn, Manchelopi in Gris Claro, Blanco Natural, Verde Claro & Verde Botella.

Manchelopi is such a unique and beautiful unspun 2-ply originating from Manchega sheep in Spain. It does require a delicate hand when knitting with it, but due to its lofty nature, it can be used at many different gauges. The unspun quality also allows for a garment made in Manchelopi to be lightweight, but super warm! It is also by far the softest unspun on the market!

Pop into the shop or take a look at our website to snap up a copy of Unfolding Landscapes and maybe some Manchelopi too!

Raise your hand if you have a mountain of scraps in your stash that you have no idea what to do with! A great option is to use them in wacky scrappy colourwork for homeware accessories!

Here, I used .yarns Haynes Creek DK in Oatmeal as the base and bits of fi*****ng to DK weight scraps to knit a hot water bottle cover for a friend who just had a baby; they are so useful for those everyday aches and pains, and the cover adds a cozy touch!

The pattern I used was Kintra HWBC by Rebecca Clow of .creabea and I have a feeling I will be using it more than once!
