I picked up these smooth granite pebbles on a road trip along the shores of Georgian Bay last week. I try to use the same colours when I paint the little islands on my Georgian Bay mugs.

Some people have asked me where to find the pine tree that I paint on my Georgian Bay mugs.
It was a confusing question for me, as the wind swept pine tree is a symbol of the rugged shores of Georgian Bay.

After last years wildfires in Alberta, and Northern Saskatchewan, I am not surprised to see wildfires break out in Northern Ontario.

While the largest wildfires are burning hundreds of kilometres away in northwestern Ontario, their impact is being felt much closer to home.

Mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for several northwestern Ontario communities, including Armstrong, Cushing Lake, Collins First Nation, Whitesand First Nation, and Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation, as firefighters continue battling rapidly growing wildland fires. Residents in Ignace, Crystal Lake, and the Highway 633 area have also been told to be prepared in case evacuation orders become necessary.

Here in North Bay and across parts of Northeastern and Central Ontario, smoke from these fires—as well as active wildfires in the United States—is drifting into the region today. You may notice hazy skies or the smell of smoke. While conditions can change quickly, smoke can reduce air quality and may affect children, older adults, and people with heart or lung conditions.

We’ve included a link to the North American smoke drift map in the comments so you can see where the smoke is moving and monitor conditions throughout the day.

Our thoughts are with the residents who have been forced to leave their homes and with the firefighters, emergency responders, pilots, and volunteers working around the clock to protect communities across northern Ontario.
