This very vintage side table took longer to prep than to paint honestly. It had years of layered oil based paints, each one not properly prepped before the next color was applied. You could easily scrape off the paint with just your finger nail. Once we started sanding.. it was a flurry of paint chip hunks flying everywhere. We ended up sanding it right down to the wood to start brand new. Sometimes the small pieces take just as long, or longer than the big ones for reasons like this.
Our first coat was primer. This seals the wood so the tannins in the raw wood don’t bleed through, changing the color of the paint, usually all blotchy. It also seals the wood so the paint is absorbed and applied evenly throughout the piece, giving it a smoother finish.
She painted beautifully from there, in “French Eggshell” from our Fusion Mineral Paint line & then new hardware. This was a custom for a repeat client and although she didn’t include having us repair & paint the inside of the cabinet, I had to. Opening that door and seeing the peeling stained old paint and a broken shelf was just something I couldn’t, in good conscience hand back to her. It was a fun surprise when she opened it for the first time and I was thrilled she was so happy, & ok, with the gift. Knowing that will be her reaction every time she opens the door made it worth it. 💕
This was a custom piece done for a client; it’s not available
