An open letter to reconnecters

Who is a Reconnecter?

A reconnecter is someone who’s family lost touch which there culture. There are many reasons for this disconnect, the 60’s scoop, adoption, hiding in plain sight, fear and shame. There was a time when children we taken, people were looked down upon, and practicing culture was forcibly prohibited.

There are many ways to reconnect

You can attend open ceremonies, speak to elders, attend community events, practice art, connect to the land, read books. There is no road map to connecting to your culture. A few things I would bear in mind. I know you’re excited, make sure to go slow, don’t antagonize someone who’s sharing things with you. Ask questions rather than trying to show your knowledge.

Don’t expect to feel welcomed

After years of “holding the line”, feeling excluded, poverty, being looked down upon a lot of indigenous folks are weary of outsiders. Thier culture has been taken from them too, but they stayed. So when you begin to integrate into spaces expect not to fit in. Belonging is earned, not freely given. Keep showing up and helping, good things take time.

Do your Research

People are going to have questions, make sure you can anwser them. Find out what your family names are, which tribe they come from, and what their stories are. This will not only help you anwser others questions, it will give you grounding and a path to reconnect to. Once you have some answers you can begin to piece together how and who you should connect to.

I see bent needles, crushed good felt and tense faces. As much as I try to make the experience relaxing, beading will show you where you’re holding tension

2. Our school system has crushed creativity

Most get frustrated when I say there isn’t a right way to do a technique. They was a direct anwser, beadwork is a process not a math equation.

3. Hustle culture has replaced presence

Many want to “finish” to get to the end frantically. Which create frustration, so much of beadwork brings us to ourselves. If we’ve spent years rushing the lesson is to slow down.
