Feeling like an 18-year-old student all over again! 👩‍🌾 My very first studies were in Horticulture, where I spent hours memorizing the botanical names of countless plants. Fast forward to today, and that background is coming full circle for my latest assignment. I am using this apple bark and foliage for a natural dyeing experiment! Let’s see what kind of color results we get. Love a bit of R&D!🌿🍎🍏🍎

Back from OHS Spinning Certificate Level II classes! 🧶✨I just got back from an amazing 8 days of course time! Honestly, I felt just like a kid going back to school. There were 19 of us “kiddos,” and we were all so excited to see each other again for our second year.The in-person classes are done, but the school year is just getting started—we now have 7 months to complete all of our homework and projects! We learned so much, and one of our classes was a fascinating introduction to natural dyes.Now that I’m back home, I am diving straight into my research. For my homework, I want to focus on a few specific natural plants that I can find right around me—things growing in our garden, deep in the forest, or even wild in the ditches by the side of the road! Before I pick my final dye, I need to do some testing and experimenting of my own.I would love to know—have any of you ever tried dyeing with wild plants? 🌿🍄🌼

De retour des cours du niveau II du certificat de filage de l'OHS ! 🧶✨ Je reviens tout juste de 8 jours de formation absolument incroyables ! Pour être honnête, je me sentais comme un enfant qui retourne à l'école. Nous étions 19 « gamins » et nous étions tous tellement excités de nous retrouver pour notre deuxième année.Les cours en présentiel sont terminés, mais l'année scolaire ne fait que commencer : nous avons maintenant 7 mois pour réaliser tous nos devoirs et projets ! Nous avons appris tellement de choses, et l'un de nos cours était une introduction fascinante aux teintures naturelles.Maintenant que je suis de retour à la maison, je plonge directement dans mes recherches. Pour mes devoirs, je veux me concentrer sur quelques plantes naturelles spécifiques que je peux trouver juste autour de moi — des choses qui poussent dans notre jardin, au fond de la forêt, ou même à l'état sauvage dans les fossés au bord de la route ! Avant de choisir ma teinture finale, je dois faire mes propres tests et expériences.J'adorerais savoir : est-ce que l'un d'entre vous a déjà essayé la teinture avec des plantes sauvages ? 🌿🍄🌼

At the Twist Festival this year, I took the time to chat with artists and meet new exhibitors. I let myself get charmed by a few great finds! One of my favorites: the spindles from Alexina and Yves Antoine Alexina | Spindle Designer, Local fibre Handprocessor . I didn’t waste any time filling them with fiber 😁. I also picked up a small weaving tool from Lauraline Lauraline , which is perfect for using up handspun yarn. I will share my other finds with you later. Did you have any favorites at the festival?

Tour de Fleece 2026: The Lineup 🧶My main focus for this Tour is meticulously documenting every single step of my spinning journey. Here is the breakdown of these skeins, from top to bottom:🔹 Top 2 skeins: Spun using supported spindles.🔹 3rd skein: Spun on my wheel, aiming for a consistent DK weight.🔹 4th skein: Finished with a chain ply.🔹 Bottom skein: Spun from luxury fibers and finished with a chain ply.

Project Focus: Romney Lamb 🐑Fiber: Romney Lamb roving from Gezellig Farm.The Goal: Dye the roving first, then study how the color transitions behave once finished with a chain ply.Current Step: Preparing to knit or weave the gauge swatch to see the final fabric result.

Supported Spindle Focus: Building Consistency 🎯Fiber: 22-Micron Merino roving.The Goal: Practice spinning on a supported spindle to build up both thickness consistency and a larger volume of fiber on the cop.Current Step: Preparing to make the final swatch to evaluate the stitch definition and texture.

The Luxury Blend Lab 🧪Fibers: Targhee wool blended with Yak and Tussah silk.The Goal: Experimenting with blending to find the perfect fiber ratio for a smooth yarn, then analyzing how the blend behaves under a chain ply.Current Step: Preparing the final swatch to evaluate the drape, softness, and stitch definition of the fabric.

Stepping Out of the Comfort Zone 🚀Fiber: 2 art batts from my stash (one containing roughly 30% flax).The Goal: Break away from my usual lace-weight habits by spinning a much thicker DK weight, and study how the linen/flax content affects the overall drape.Current Step: Preparing to create the swatch to analyze the final fabric texture and stiffness

Hand-spun yarn skeins are done, now it’s time for swatching! 🧵🧶It’s not easy when you’re not an experienced knitter yet... Between choosing the right needles, testing the yarn single or held double, and searching for the perfect drape for my next sweater, it’s quite a challenge! 🫣🤍To help me through, I am consulting the go-to reference book, Yarnitecture by Jillian Moreno, which is perfect for knitting with hand-spun yarn. 🧶 Part 2: Braid Transformation / L'histoire d'une transformation
Continuing the journey of transforming raw fiber into yarn! This is Part 2, featuring a beautiful Cormo braid from .melanie
The Technique:
I used the exact same approach as the first braid to keep consistency. I divided the braid by colors into separate piles, then spun them by altering the sequence.
The Companion Single:
To ply with the Cormo, I spun a coated white BFL x Merino fleece from Alberta. I hand-dyed the fiber before spinning with 2 colors to give it depth. In person, you can see rich variations of hot pink and deep purple!

🎨 Part 3?
I have one last braid left with pops of pink. I'm brainstorming how to dye the companion single. What color palette do you think would complement it best?

Je continue de partager le parcours de la transformation de la fibre brute en fil ! Voici la deuxième partie, avec une autre magnifique tresse de Cormo de .
La technique :
J'ai procédé exactement de la même manière que pour la première afin de conserver une belle uniformité. J'ai séparé la tresse par couleur en différents tas, puis je les ai filés en alternant la séquence.
Le célibataire d'accompagnement :
Pour le retors, j'ai filé une toison blanche protégée de BFL x Mérinos de l'Alberta. J'ai teint la fibre à la main avant le filage avec 2 couleurs pour lui donner de la profondeur. En personne, on voit de superbes variations de rose vif et de violet foncé !

🎨 Partie 3 ?
Il me reste une dernière tresse à filer avec des touches de rose. Je réfléchis à la teinture du célibataire qui l'accompagnera. Quelle palette de couleurs serait idéale selon vous pour la compléter ?
