Another cold day, another reason to get the fire going ❄️

Our rule of thumb for mixing and matching styles is to find two that share some common design elements, then use colour and textiles to maintain a through-line. For example, I find that Craftsman homes work well with mid-century modern furniture because both feature clean lines, stained wood, and an appreciation for craftsmanship.

A 100% utilitarian kitchen serves a purpose, but if you don’t feel good while you’re working in it, is it still a good design? Sometimes function isn’t just about the nuts and bolts of life, but about bringing joy ✨

This open shelving allows our client to display her favourite tchotchkes and artwork, keeps go-to cookbooks close at hand, and looks great while doing it. The elimination of cupboard doors on this wall also helps the space feel a little bit more open, which was crucial for the small footprint of the room.

What do you value most in a kitchen? Function or beauty? A bit of both?

We love to create beautiful spaces, but always put function first.

To ensure our designs work hard for our clients, we start by getting to know their daily routines, what works well in their current space and what drives them crazy about it. We always plan for life as it’s lived 90% of the time, and ensure our designs can flex to suit the 10%, too.

This appliance cupboard is where form and function collide in our Hamilton Heritage Home project. The kitchen has a relatively small footprint, and we wanted to help it feel a bit bigger by reducing visual clutter. The appliance cupboard is the perfect solution - there when you want it, hidden away when you don’t. It keeps things close-at-hand without filling countertops, and blends seamlessly with the panel-ready refrigerator to its right.
