The Natural Stone Institute's annual Study Tour brought stone professionals from across the country to Vermont yesterday, and we were honored to welcome the group to our E.L. Smith Quarry in Barre.

This quarry has been in continuous operation since 1883, when the Smith brothers first broke ground in Graniteville. Today, it's recognized as the world's largest deep-hole granite quarry, descending nearly 600 feet into a granite deposit hundreds of millions of years in the making. The Barre Gray™ granite extracted here is prized for its fine, even grain and exceptional performance qualities. It has built iconic monuments, civic buildings, and public spaces for over a century across the country.

Thank you to the NSI for coordinating another outstanding tour, and to every attendee who took the time to learn alongside our team. Events like this are how the next generation of architects, fabricators, and stone professionals come to understand and appreciate what it takes to bring natural stone from the ground into the built world. Polycor is proud to support NSI's mission, and we're already looking forward to the next one.

The New York Life Insurance Company building, with its Gothic Revival style architecture designed by Cass Gilbert, was completed in 1928 and takes up one entire block in New York City.

Dickies Arena in Fort Worth was built to integrate with its neighbors. Architect David M. Schwarz designed the facade in a Southwest Art Deco style that echoes the 1930s buildings across the Will Rogers Memorial Center campus, pairing warm toned brick with dark Picasso™ granite for the base and planters resulting in a building that reads as though it's always been part of the local architectural vernacular.

Battlestar Galactica was filmed here because of its futuristic design. Simon Fraser University's Brutalist plaza was renewed with 193,600 square feet of Polycor granite after the original precast concrete pavers failed due to the abundance of moisture in the Pacific Northwest climate. The patchwork of Cambrian Black™, Picasso™, Bethel White™, and Barre Gray™ conveys a dark-to-light ‘dissolving’ effect that the landscape architect John Wall designed the project around.

Seeing the light after lying dormant for millions of years. Before these granite blocks become a facade, a paver, or a countertop, they undergo a complex process of being revealed from the bedrock. The middle steps between the earth and the finished space can be just as inspiring as the project designs where the stone is ultimately used.
