We are recognizing National AccessAbility Week (May 31 to June 6), reflecting on the contributions of people with disabilities and how we can create more inclusive, barrier-free spaces across our communities. The 2026 theme, Building a Strong, Accessible Canada, speaks to the importance of accessibility in creating communities where everyone feels they belong.

At aodbt, we’re proud to have two Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification™ (RHFAC) Professionals on our team—Leif Friggstad, Principal Architect, and McKenzie Cooper, Interior Designer—who bring a thoughtful, personal perspective to our work. Guided by the RHFAC framework, which evaluates how well buildings support meaningful access, design becomes an opportunity to remove barriers and create environments that feel welcoming to all. Accessibility isn’t an add-on—it’s a fundamental part of design that helps people feel respected, included, and able to take part.

As we recognize National AccessAbility Week, we’re reminded that even small, thoughtful decisions can have a lasting impact, and that more inclusive communities begin with the spaces we create together.

The new Regina Operations and Maintenance Complex (ROMC) brings SaskPower’s Regina‑area teams together in one consolidated location with the goal of supporting more efficient operations and improved access to the service area. Located on approximately 100‑acres of property within the Global Transportation Hub in Regina, the ROMC provides more than 85 acres of exterior storage yard space along with specialized buildings for logistics, fleet services, cold storage, and material staging.

Phase 1 of the project was completed in early 2024 and included five purpose-built facilities including a logistics warehouse, fleet vehicle maintenance building, decontamination building, cold storage and material staging building, and a guardhouse. Phase 2 is currently underway and will provide centralized offices, training spaces, labs, shops, and vehicle storage.

Designed to meet NECB standards and incorporate LEED Silver strategies, the ROMC reflects SaskPower’s commitment to modern, sustainable, and high‑performing infrastructure. The overall design supports efficient vehicle movement, equipment and material access, and long‑term growth, creating a centralized hub for SaskPower’s regional operations.

The interiors at the SaskPower Regina Operations and Maintenance Complex (ROMC) focuses on creating a supportive and inviting environment that enhances productivity, training, and day‑to‑day operations across multiple SaskPower teams. Engaging key personnel throughout the design process was an important part of the project, helping align the spaces with operational needs while improving flow and functionality. The workspace includes a mix of private offices and open‑concept areas based on departmental requirements, along with meeting rooms in a range of sizes to support different needs. Larger meeting spaces are designed as flexible spaces that can be reconfigured to accommodate training sessions, group discussions, or project‑based work.

The design prioritizes sustainability, collaboration, and productivity, resulting in a dynamic workspace that supports well‑being and aligns with modern work practices. Access to natural light is optimized throughout each building to create a healthier, more comfortable environment. Guided by SaskPower’s Office and Facility Standards, the design emphasizes consistency, accessibility, and safety. Interior finishes incorporate durable materials, clear wayfinding, and SaskPower’s branded colours, creating a cohesive visual identity throughout the complex.
