I THINK TWO THINGS CAN BE TRUE AT THE SAME TIME. ❤️
I can feel incredibly lucky to do what I do and still sometimes wonder about the things I’ve missed while doing it.
I don’t talk about this very often, but there are days when I feel guilty that I haven’t always been as present as I think I should be.
There have been invitations I’ve turned down, people I don’t see enough, things I’ve missed, and times when I’ve thought, I really should make more time for that.
Owning a business is a strange thing.
Especially when it’s something you’ve poured so much of yourself into.
Even when I’m not physically at Brassy Lassy, there’s always something happening behind the scenes. Something to make, order, plan, fix, pay, answer, photograph, price or figure out.
And somewhere along the way, keeping up with the life you’ve created can start taking up an awful lot of the life you’re actually living.
I have mixed feelings about that some days.
Because the truth is, Brassy Lassy has never just been about making money to me. Of course it’s a business and it has to pay its bills, but that was never the part that made it important to me.
I genuinely try to live my life believing that kindness matters. That how we make people feel matters. That sometimes a small conversation, a little encouragement, a laugh, or simply feeling understood can make somebody’s day a little easier.
And I want the store to feel like that too.
So when someone tells me Brassy Lassy is their happy place, or their safe place, it hits me differently.
When someone says they were having a terrible day and just needed to come in for a little while...
When they tell us something they found there helped them through a difficult time, reminded them of someone they loved, or simply made their day a little brighter...
Those are the moments that make me feel at peace with some of the choices I’ve made.
Because maybe all those hours weren’t only spent building a store.
Maybe I was also building a little place where people could come and feel good for a while.
And if that's what Brassy Lassy has become for even some of the people who walk through the door, then getting that part right matters enormously to me. ❤️
I still think about balance. I still wonder sometimes if I’ve got it right. I still wish there were more hours for the people and things outside of work that matter to me.
Maybe there isn't a perfect answer.
Maybe we can be incredibly grateful for the life we've built and still wonder about the things we've missed while building it.
And maybe, every now and then, we're given one of those little moments that reminds us why we chose the path we did.
Do you ever look at something you’ve poured years of yourself into and feel both things at once — grateful for what it became, but sometimes wondering what you gave up along the way? ❤️
