Time for another Fun Fact Friday!
Did you know that Terrace was once famous for growing extra large strawberries? They were called the “Skeena Wonders,” which became a major part of the region’s early agricultural history. These strawberries were so large that just 7 to 9 berries could fill an entire basket! Their late-ripening season gave local farmers an advantage, helping create a booming farm economy in the Skeena River Valley. In the early 1900s, and especially around the 1920s, refrigerated railway cars were used to ship these giant strawberries to markets as far away as Winnipeg, Chicago, Vancouver, and Prince Rupert. The success and reputation of these enormous berries helped put Terrace’s agricultural community on the map and contributed to the area being described as a “Sunny Mountain Oasis.” Today, the story of the Skeena Wonder remains a fascinating piece of Terrace’s local farming heritage and a reminder of the important role agriculture once played in the Skeena Valley.
