Confession time…

I haven’t used flower foam since 2020 and lately I’ve been thinking about how much easier it would be if I just…did.

The extra stress of water sloshing about in transit, greater ability to have stems going in more angled directions and a situation that keeps coming up time and time again “can you design them in the green sponge so we can just take the flowers and leave the vase at the end of the night?”

That last one keeps getting me. If there is one place floral foam can surely be eliminated, it’s the centrepieces. Yes it’s extra work to remove the stems and leave the vase, but a part of my design process is trying to not use foam to reduce waste, allow for reusing mechanics (we reuse chicken wire over and over) and also protect ourselves from toxic materials. The floral industry is wasteful, full of chemicals and don’t even get me started on the plastic. Any small step I can take makes a difference.

I would never shame anyone for using it because it honestly is an amazing design tool. If a project or design concept came to me that was really speaking to me and I just can’t conceptualize how to build it without it, or due to logistical constraints, I think I would dabble again.

Realizing I’m never going to be that florist who can make cutesy and aesthetic reels because that’s not really what this is about.

I am that florist who can make a super layered, lush, garden-y arrangement in an unexpected colour palette using floral varieties that you might not have seen before and that’s actually OK because you’re hiring us to choose the best flowers for you and then take them and create magic and then try to capture a photo of it in the only spot in the shop to pose an arrangement with natural light to share on here in hopes that aligned people reach out to me to send flowers to their friends and loved ones, design flowers for a brand or event or best yet to hire me as their wedding florist 🤝
