It’s finally happening!
We’re finally getting more locally *field* grown flowers and we’re adding in all the special garden bits in every order.
While we have access to locally grown flowers in Ontario all year, majority of them are grown in temperature controlled greenhouses. I use these every week and I love them- nice long sturdy stems and big blooms!
However, it’s the more niche varieties that aren’t readily available to every florist that really bring me so much joy. Sourcing specialty flowers is a whole job in itself. You can’t just go to the main wholesalers and buy a bunch of bearded iris, itoh peonies, cherry caramel phlox or certain varieties in unique colours. That’s where the smaller scale flower farmers come in 💪
It’s a highly competitive market, the specialty locally grown flower market, and I am soooo lucky to have my mom who switched paths in life to grow cut flowers. As her # 1 customer (hehe), I get to work with her to curate the varieties she’ll grow.
We will have weeks where the fridge is 85% flowers grown by her and how cool is that?! As I said, these flowers are more limited and their beauty is truly fleeting so get them while you can. So many field grown flowers are only around for 1-2 weeks out of the whole year 💘
P.S. We will be next Saturday June 13 and I was just at my mom’s and her peonies are looking like they’ll be popping up just in time 😉
