Rug specification should begin earlier than most designers think.

Choosing appearance over performance can create maintenance issues, especially in high-use spaces. Materials such as Tencel and viscose offer softness and sheen, but New Zealand wool blended with extruded bamboo silk can deliver a similar look with greater practicality.

Scale matters just as much. A rug should anchor the furniture plan, not float beneath it.

Consider the rug early. It influences layout, colour, construction and lead time. The sooner its role is defined, the stronger the final room will be.

Bold design needs a strong foundation.

For Laura Thornton’s Filippi project, Studio 321B created a bespoke area rug designed to hold its own within a modern, organic interior. Made from New Zealand wool and bamboo silk, its cloud-like forms bring movement, texture and quiet drama to the room.

The rug became the anchor for Laura’s larger composition, supporting the furniture plan while giving the space a distinct point of view. A clear example of what thoughtful collaboration between designer and rug specialist can achieve.

Every rug needs a defined role. Should it quietly support the room, or become the focal point?

In bedrooms, dens and other quieter spaces, the rug may work best when it connects the flooring, furniture and finishes. Subtle colour and texture can add warmth and depth without competing for attention.

In foyers, living rooms and gathering spaces, the rug can take a stronger position through contrast, movement or pattern.

Both approaches work. The key is deciding early, before colour, construction and scale are finalized. Clear intent leads to a more resolved room.
