All in all, I wanted to say that I’m grateful to have this opportunity to give back to the community of art and textile lovers. The fund I help raised may not be significant but to me, it is the willfulness of people that participated in this event that counts. The amount of fabrics that we saved from landfill is tiny compared to those disposed daily in factories but it is the message it brings out that counts. We’ll move our small needle forward to guide the idea thread to the other end.

To Be honest, some fabrics received are not easy to match. We learn that we should not mix 2 aggressive patterns together as one of them should be calm to tone it down or to bring out the charm of the primary. Pattern Clash you say? They are just not in the right colour harmony. There was some struggle there but the more important focus should be on giving a second life to the fabrics and make them last longer. - to be continued -

I started this project in Feb. which is a short and busy month but you know you can always make time for the things that you enjoying doing. The fabrics I received are colourful with various texture. Some of them are made in France. Quality textile. I thought I’m going to make 3 bags but I ended up making 5. They may not all have special looking as creativity takes time but they are definitely one of a kind!

My husband named the bag in the photo as Watermelon Bag due to its shape and colour. The photos cannot do the justice of the beauty of the fabrics and its form. It does have the highest bid of all but it certainly is my favourite. photo credit: Textile museum of Canada

2 years ago, pandemic hit us and I lost my job. Like Alexander Graham Bell says, when one door closes another opens. I had more time to spend on sewing and I used my skills well in giving back to the society. My first volunteer sewing project was to sewing scrub caps. For the frontline healthcare workers. This year, I found myself a pleasurable volunteer opportunity which is to sew bags for a fundraising event of Textile Museum of Canada. The brilliant idea is to upcycle fabric scraps and turn them into fun and practical bags which are to be auctioned to raise fund for the Museum.

Before knowing this event, I was well aware of the substantial amount of textile waste the fashion industry created. I wished that there would be organizations like here in Toronto to repurpose fabric scraps. This unwanted fact doesn’t eat away my affection for beautiful garments and textile. I want to learn and do more to rescue all these lovable materials. - to be continued -

2 years ago, I sewed some head scrubs for frontline health workers. This year, I’d like to use my skills and resources to do something meaningful again for our society. I’ve participated to the “It’s in the bag” fund raising project and made 5 bags for this auction event. This is my first one, I called it Watermelon Bag. It can blow up like a ball if you fill it up. The fabrics that I used are fabrics scraps that are supposed to be sent to landfill. It is such a waste as the fabrics I used are gorgeous! The green coloured fabric you see in the picture is actually made in France, beautifully weaved textile!
