The final chapter of My French Odyssey is live. 🇫🇷

It covers some of the lessons I learned in France — and the plans I’ve come home with, now that I’m back in Toronto:

🌡️ A heatwave that caught up with me in a way I genuinely wasn’t prepared for
🍞 A question about what makes a city’s food its own — and an idea I want to build with Toronto

If you’ve made it through all three parts of the odyssey with me — thank you. As a small thank you, use code ODYSSEY for 15% off and free shipping on orders of $75+ at spentgoods.ca or organiclifestyle.com. Valid until Aug 31, 2026.

How does an entire culture become more sustainable? I went to France to learn more about their sustainability efforts and found it showing up in places I never expected:

🏡 A real estate listing with a number stapled right next to the price that had nothing to do with square footage
🚆 A train ticket machine that quietly does the car-vs-rail math for you, before you’ve even decided

Turns out the answer isn’t one big policy. It’s a dozen small ones, built into decisions people are already making anyway.

(Also — I ate a lot of bread along the way. No regrets.) 🥖

I keep watching gas prices creep up and thinking about what heating my condo is going to cost me in ten years, not just this winter.

Everyone says the same thing about switching to a heat pump: smart long-term move, costs more upfront than just replacing the gas boiler with another one. True, but it left the actual number unanswered — how much more, and does that gap close once you factor in where fossil fuel pricing seems to be headed.

So I started digging. Costs, Ontario rebates, the real gas-versus-electric comparison. And I’ll be honest, I’m not done — a few things I looked into raised more questions than they answered, especially around what actually qualifies for rebates in a condo specifically.

If you’ve made this switch already, or you’re stuck on the same math I am, I’d genuinely like to hear from you.

Just around the kitty corner from Port of Nice, we discovered a beautifully curated store containing all natural and sustainably sourced household goods, made using raffia, jute, terracotta and linens.

Raffia was a new material for me. Learned that natural raffia is plant-based and biodegradable, but note synthetic raffia exists and is made from extruded polypropylene (a plastic)

Raffia is a natural fiber harvested from the leaves of the raffia palm (Raphia species), native to Madagascar and tropical Africa, widely used in crafts, fashion, and horticulture.

France is actually the world’s leading producer of flax — the plant from which linen is made.

Normandy’s mild and temperate climate — with its balance of sunshine and rain — is ideal for flax cultivation, requiring no irrigation and minimal chemical inputs. Normandy alone accounts for up to 70% of France’s flax production, and France as a whole produces an estimated 61% of global flax supply.

Long before modern water filters existed, people across South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East discovered that storing water in unglazed terracotta pots made it better — the clay walls naturally leach trace minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron into the water while simultaneously filtering out impurities through their porous micro-texture. It’s a quiet, two-way exchange between earth and water that has quietly sustained communities for centuries.

Thus, I was pleased to discover a terracotta lamp shade — the clay’s porous texture naturally diffuses light into a warm, ambient glow, transforming the quality of a room’s atmosphere in a way that glass or metal shades simply can’t replicate.

Day 1 Toronto ~ Nice

Researching new sustainable products has begun with my first sandwich on board a flight to Nice, France from Toronto. Even more impressive than the sandwich was the climate, ethical, and local sourcing storytelling on the packaging.

“Did you know that Beemster cheese is made by a core committed small family
farms and was founded in 1901? Beemster farmers are committers to raising healthy, happy cows that graze outside as much as nature allows. with this meadow milk their Master Cheesemakers craft delicious cheese in a climate-neutral cheese dairy.
Rondeel uses a unique, sustainable housing concept to rear their chickens, with their health, safety and welfare paramount. Rondeel eggs are regarded the highest three-star rating by the Dutch Society for the Protection of Animals”

Given climate change is #9 on Canadians top concerns (where affordability / cost of living are at the top), we’re considering changing our sustainability messaging towards Canadian Wellbeing (how does this improve Canadian life for the better) instead. We need to appeal to a wider base and be able to bridge those who don’t make decisions based on the planet as well.

Poll:

Yes- Appeal to supporting Canadian or No- keep climate messaging
