5 Ways to Prolong the Life of Your Deck 🛠️🏡
Your deck is a big investment — a little regular care can help it last many more years, especially with Toronto’s freeze-thaw winters and humid summers.
Here are five simple things you can do:
1. Clean regularlySweep off leaves, dirt, and debris often (especially between the boards). Trapped moisture is one of the fastest ways wood starts to rot.
2. Seal or stain on scheduleApply a quality water-repellent sealer or stain every 1–3 years. This protects against rain, snow, and UV damage.
3. Inspect and repair promptlyCheck for loose boards, popped screws, soft spots, or rotting wood twice a year (spring and fall). Fix small issues before they become big (and expensive) problems.
4. Clear snow the right wayUse a plastic shovel and avoid rock salt or harsh de-icers. Chloride salts can damage both wood and fasteners.
5. Keep air flowing and water drainingTrim back plants and shrubs so they don’t touch the deck, keep the area underneath clear, and make sure water doesn’t pool on or around it.
Looking after your deck now means more summers of enjoyment later!
